M.Tech stipend for GATE qualifiers
On this page
The M.Tech stipend for GATE qualifiers is a monthly assistance of Rs.12,400, generally for 22 months, given to students admitted to M.Tech with a valid GATE score. The GATE 2027 site cites the AICTE PG Scholarship (GATE/GPAT) guidelines for this. The admitting institute manages it and decides how many students receive it, so a seat does not automatically come with a stipend.
Amounts at a glance
| Programme | Monthly amount | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| M.Tech assistance | Rs.12,400 | Generally 22 months |
| Direct PhD, years 1 and 2 | Rs.37,000 | 2 years |
| Direct PhD, years 3 to 5 | Rs.42,000 | 3 years |
The direct-PhD rates apply to candidates with a valid GATE score after B.E., B.Tech. or M.Sc. They come from the Ministry of Finance circular 33(14)PFC-II/2018 of 21 June 2023.
What the numbers add up to
At Rs.12,400 for 22 months, M.Tech assistance comes to Rs.2,72,800. A direct-PhD student who gets the full five years at the above rates would receive Rs.24 lakh (Rs.8,88,000 in the first two years and Rs.15,12,000 in the next three). Treat these as arithmetic on the published rates, not a promise of what any institute will pay.
Conditions to remember
- Not automatic. The institute decides who receives the assistance and how many students get it.
- Valid score needed. A GATE score is valid for three years from the result date. See GATE score.
- Admission rules differ. The Ministry of Education guidelines ask for at least 70% weightage to GATE in PG admission, and the rest can be a test, interview or academic record. Some colleges also admit on GATE without any MoE scholarship.
- Qualifying is not enough. Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job.
Where to apply
IITs and IISc take offers through COAP, while NITs, IIITs and similar institutes admit through CCMT. Each institute states its own scholarship terms in its admission notice. The after GATE guide compares M.Tech with PSU jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the M.Tech stipend paid to every GATE-qualified student?

Does the stipend rate change?
The figures here are those cited on the GATE 2027 site. Check the current AICTE guidelines and your institute's notice before you plan around them.
