GATE organising institute
On this page
The GATE organising institute is the IIT or IISc that runs the exam for one year: it builds the website and brochure, runs registration, conducts the test and declares results. GATE itself is run jointly by IISc and seven IITs for the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. The role rotates, and for GATE 2027 it is IIT Madras.
Who ran which year
| Exam | Organising institute |
|---|---|
| GATE 2024 | IISc Bengaluru |
| GATE 2025 | IIT Roorkee |
| GATE 2026 | IIT Guwahati |
| GATE 2027 | IIT Madras |
The seven participating IITs are Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee. The 2025 entry is inferred from COAP 2026 having been run by IIT Roorkee, because the previous year's GATE organiser runs COAP. Each year has its own website. The GATE 2027 site is gate2027.iitm.ac.in, and the 2026 site is gate2026.iitg.ac.in.
What the organising institute handles
- The information brochure, syllabus and important dates.
- Registration on GOAPS, fees and the correction window.
- Exam cities, admit cards and the question papers.
- Response sheets, answer keys and the challenge window.
- Results and the GATE scorecard.
Exam cities are grouped into eight zones, and you choose six cities from the same zone. For GATE 2027, the IIT Madras zone lists Tamil Nadu cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Salem. The list is tentative, so confirm it on the site.
What it does not decide
The organising institute does not decide who gets an M.Tech seat or a job. Admitting institutes and PSUs set their own cut-offs, interviews and rules. Qualifying marks come from the paper's results, and a scorecard is not an admission. See the M.Tech stipend and PSU recruitment pages for what happens next.
Why it matters to you
Because the organiser changes, dates, fees, cities and even the list of papers can change from year to year. GATE 2027, for instance, adds a Robotics and Automation paper, folds Textile Engineering into XE and spreads the exam over six days. Never use an old brochure. Always read the one for your exam year, and check the GATE registration guide for the current cycle.
