GATE two-paper combinations
On this page
A two-paper combination is a pair of GATE papers you take in the same cycle. You can sit one paper or two, but if you choose two, the second must be on the list allowed for your primary paper, and both go into a single application. The list below is for GATE 2027, and IIT Madras may open additional combinations later.
The rules
- Apply once for both papers. Multiple applications are rejected without a refund.
- The second paper may be at a different centre in the same city.
- A candidate in a multi-session paper sits only one assigned session of it.
- You pay the fee for each paper. The website and the brochure differ on late-period totals for two papers, so check the fee table.
Allowed secondary papers for common primaries (GATE 2027)
| Primary paper | Allowed second paper |
|---|---|
| CS (Computer Science) | DA, EC, GE, MA, ME, PH, RA, ST |
| EC (Electronics) | CS, DA, EE, IN, PH, RA |
| EE (Electrical) | DA, EC, IN, PH, RA |
| ME (Mechanical) | AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA, XE |
| CE (Civil) | AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM, XE |
| DA (Data Science and AI) | CS, EC, EE, MA, ME, PH, RA, ST, XE |
Other primaries have their own lists in the official table. Not every pair you might expect is allowed. CS and EE cannot be combined, and MN (Mining) cannot be paired with any other paper. The popular pairs are CS with DA, EC with EE, ME with XE and EE with RA.
Choosing a pair
Pick two papers whose syllabi overlap, so that revision serves both. CS and DA share linear algebra, probability and databases, although CS programming is in C and DA programming is in Python. EC and EE share signals and systems, control systems and engineering mathematics. Papers with little overlap double your syllabus.
A second paper helps only if the institute you target accepts it. Choosing a paper outside your discipline is allowed, but the admitting institute decides whether to accept it, so check first. The GATE exam pattern guide explains the paper structure, and XE is part of the popular ME with XE pair.
Frequently asked questions
