Multi-session papers in GATE
On this page
A multi-session paper is a GATE paper that is held in more than one exam session because many candidates take it. You sit only the one session you are assigned, and your marks are then normalised so that sessions of different difficulty can be compared fairly. Papers that run in a single session use raw marks.
What we know for 2026 and 2027
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| GATE 2026 | Computer Science (CS) and Civil Engineering (CE) each ran two sessions, published as CS1, CS2, CE1 and CE2 |
| GATE 2027 exam days | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, over three weekends |
| Sessions each day | Forenoon 9:30 to 12:30 and afternoon 2:30 to 5:30 |
| Which papers have several sessions | Announced with the schedule; not out as of 9 October 2026 |
GATE 2026 used four exam days, and 2027 has six, so there are more session slots. We do not guess which papers will be multi-session.
How it affects you
- You do not choose. The session is assigned. Do not plan around getting a particular one.
- Two papers. If you take a second paper, it may be at a different centre in the same city.
- Raw marks are not comparable across sessions. If a friend in the other session of your paper compares marks with you, it tells you little, because normalisation will adjust both.
- Estimating your result. Compute your raw marks from the answer key, treat them as a range and wait for the official result. The score calculation guide shows how.
Preparation tips
Past papers are published by session, with one file for each: for 2026, CS1 and CS2, CE1 and CE2. Attempt both sessions of your paper as separate full tests. Difficulty can differ between sessions, so aim at the harder one, and use the previous year papers guide to schedule them.
The formula for normalisation and a worked example are on the normalised marks page. The final GATE score uses the normalised marks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose the morning or afternoon session in GATE?
No. For a multi-session paper you are assigned to a session.
Does normalisation make a harder session unfair?
It is designed to adjust for difficulty differences, using the marks of all sessions. The institute justifies it because sessions are allotted at random and are of comparable size.
