The Thirukkural is named in the Tamil Nadu history unit of the TNPSC syllabus, and the syllabus wording points to themes, not to memorised couplets: its significance as secular literature, relevance to everyday life, its impact on humanity, universal values, relevance to socio-politico-economic affairs, and its philosophical content. Questions are still often factual, and they ask about structure, chapter counts and the best-known associations. These five do the same. More on the whole subject is in TNPSC Thirukkural.

What this topic covers

  • Structure: 133 chapters (adhikarams) of 10 couplets each, making 1,330 kurals, in three sections.
  • Form: each kural is a two-line verse of seven metrical feet (a kural venba).
  • Themes: virtue, wealth and love, with a message meant for all people.
  • Cultural associations: the Kanyakumari statue, Thiruvalluvar Aandu and the many names of the work.

Aram (Virtue)அறத்துப்பால்38380
Porul (Wealth)பொருட்பால்70700

Answers and explanations

  1. D. The Thirukkural has 133 chapters of 10 couplets each, so 1,330 kurals. The number 1,330 is the count of kurals, not of chapters.
  2. C. Porul has 70 chapters (700 kurals), Aram has 38 and Inbam has 25. Adding them gives 133.
  3. A. The 133-foot statue at Kanyakumari, unveiled on 1 January 2000, represents the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural. Its pedestal stands for the 38 chapters of Aram, and the statue itself for the 95 chapters of Porul and Inbam.
  4. B. Thiruvalluvar Aandu is counted as the Gregorian year plus 31. The Tamil Nadu government adopted this era in 1971.
  5. C. This is the first kural, the opening of the first chapter, The Praise of God. It compares the first letter of the alphabet to the first cause of the world. You can read it at Kural 1 and see the rest of its chapter at The Praise of God.

How to prepare the Thirukkural

Start with the numbers: 133, 1,330, 38, 70, 25. Then say the sentence "38 plus 70 plus 25 is 133" until you can write it without thinking, because it checks every number at once.

Next, prepare the themes the syllabus names. For each of the six themes, write one sentence and one example kural, and use your own words. For instance, "relevance to everyday life" can use a kural on gratitude or on speaking kindly, and "secular literature" can note that its teaching is addressed to all people and is not tied to one religion. You do not need to memorise dozens of couplets. Knowing five or six well, with their chapter names, is enough for an SSLC-standard question.

Finally, note the other names: Muppal (the three-part work), Tamil Marai, Poyyamozhi and Pothumarai, and the location of the statue at Kanyakumari. For the General Tamil side, the Thirukkural also features in the Tamil papers, so check the Tamil-script syllabus in the notification and read the TNPSC General Tamil guide. For the history angle, TNPSC Sangam age practice places the work among the Pathinenkilkanakku texts.

The Thirukkural is a small topic with a high return, so test it twice: once straight after learning and once a week later. PrepMatic's topic tests (about 15 questions, 30 minutes) fit this style of spaced revision, and Tamil-medium aspirants can choose Tamil as the exam language so that questions and options appear in Tamil.
