TNPSC Tamil Nadu geography practice questions
On this page
Questions on the geography of the home state are the easiest geography marks in a TNPSC paper, because they reward local knowledge as much as study. They cover rainfall, rivers, hills, soils, crops and natural features. The Geography unit has about 5 of the 75 General Studies questions, and a good share of them are about Tamil Nadu. The five questions below sample the types. See TNPSC Geography for the bigger picture.

Answers and explanations
- A. The north-east monsoon, from October to December, brings Tamil Nadu its largest share of rainfall, because the state lies in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats during the south-west monsoon. The state's rainfall comes in several seasons, but this is the biggest.
- C. Doddabetta, near Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris, is the highest peak in the state at 2,637 m. Anamudi, the highest peak in the Western Ghats, is in Kerala.
- B. In Sangam literature the Kaveri is called Ponni. Porunai is the old Tamil name of the Thamirabarani.
- D. Red soil covers the largest area of Tamil Nadu. Alluvial soil is found in the Kaveri delta, and black soil in parts of Coimbatore, Madurai and Thoothukudi.
- C. Pichavaram, near Chidambaram in Cuddalore district, is one of the largest mangrove forests in India and is known for its network of small channels.
How to prepare Tamil Nadu geography
Start with a blank outline map of the state and fill it in three passes. The first pass is physical: the Western Ghats along the west, the Eastern Ghats in scattered hills, the Nilgiris at the meeting point, and the coastline. The second is rivers, with their sources and the districts they cross. The third is resources: crops, minerals (lignite at Neyveli), salt pans, and ports.
Memorise the "hill station and its hills" pairs, because they are commonly asked: Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris, Kodaikanal in the Palani Hills, Yercaud in the Shevaroy Hills and Kolli Malai in Namakkal. Add the three biosphere reserves, the main wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, and the Ramsar sites, but note the date of any count, since the number of protected areas changes.
Add the district map last. District boundaries and counts have changed in recent years, so check a current map and treat any older list as a draft. Use the lists in the Tamil Nadu GK section for exact names and details.
Complement this with TNPSC Indian geography practice and TNPSC agriculture and industry practice, where the crops and industrial towns of the state are covered.
