TNPSC agriculture and industry practice questions
On this page
Agriculture and industry questions are where the economy unit meets everyday knowledge, so they can look easy and still cost marks. TNPSC asks about revolutions, crop seasons, support prices and the industrial towns of the state. The five questions below are typical of Group 4 level. The broader guide is TNPSC Indian Economy.
What this topic covers
- Agriculture: Kharif and Rabi seasons, major crops, irrigation, land reforms and the Green Revolution.
- Revolutions: the "colour" revolutions associated with food grains, milk, oilseeds and fish.
- Agricultural policy: Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the role of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).
- Industry: iron and steel, textiles, the 1956 industrial policy and the 1991 reforms.

Answers and explanations
- B. M. S. Swaminathan, a Tamil Nadu scientist, led the effort to introduce high-yielding wheat and rice varieties in India. Verghese Kurien is linked to the White Revolution, Homi Bhabha to atomic energy and Vikram Sarabhai to space research.
- C. Operation Flood, begun in 1970, expanded milk production and built a national milk grid, and is called the White Revolution. Fish production is the Blue Revolution, and oilseeds the Yellow Revolution.
- D. Rice is sown with the monsoon and harvested in autumn, so it is a Kharif crop. Wheat, barley and mustard are Rabi crops, sown in winter and harvested in spring.
- A. The Tata Iron and Steel Company was founded in 1907 and built its plant at Sakchi, which is now Jamshedpur. Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur are public-sector steel plants set up in the 1950s.
- C. The CACP recommends MSPs, and the Government of India announces them. The Food Corporation of India buys grain at those prices.
How to prepare agriculture and industry
Make a crop table with four columns: crop, season (Kharif, Rabi or Zaid), main states and the soil or climate it likes. Fifteen crops are enough. Next to it, list the "revolutions" with one product each. That table settles most questions in this chapter and also helps in Geography.
For industry, divide your notes into three tiers. The colonial inheritance (textiles, jute, steel at Jamshedpur). The planned industrialisation after 1951, in which public-sector steel plants and the 1956 industrial policy matter. And the 1991 reforms, which loosened licensing and opened trade. Link each tier to a date and a reason.
The Tamil Nadu table above is the part most likely to be asked in a state exam. Learn it with a map open, which doubles as Geography revision. Cross-check with TNPSC Tamil Nadu geography practice for rivers, soils and crops of the state.
Use only the textbook or official figures for production and rank, and treat any "India is the largest producer of..." line as time-sensitive unless its source is dated.
