Human body questions are the commonest zoology items in the TNPSC General Science unit. They ask which organ does what, which gland makes which hormone, and which bone or vessel is notable. The unit carries about 5 of the 75 questions in the General Studies paper, so the aim is a set of facts you can recall quickly. The five questions below are representative. See TNPSC General Science for the bigger picture.

What this topic covers

  • Digestive system: organs, enzymes and the role of the liver and pancreas.
  • Circulatory system: the heart, blood vessels, blood groups.
  • Respiratory and excretory systems: lungs, kidneys and the nephron.
  • Endocrine and nervous systems: glands, hormones, neurons.
  • Skeletal and muscular systems: bones and joints.
SystemFact to remember
CirculatoryThe heart has four chambers: two atria and two ventricles
DigestiveThe liver is the largest gland; most digestion ends in the small intestine
ExcretoryThe nephron is the functional unit of the kidney
EndocrineThe pancreas produces insulin; the pituitary is the master gland
NervousThe neuron is the structural and functional unit
SkeletalAn adult human has 206 bones; the stapes in the ear is the smallest

Sample questions

Question 1

Which blood vessel carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart?

  • A. Vena cava
  • B. Pulmonary artery
  • C. Pulmonary vein
  • D. Renal vein

Question 2

The largest gland in the human body is the:

  • A. liver
  • B. pancreas
  • C. thyroid
  • D. pituitary

Question 3

The structural and functional unit of the kidney is the:

  • A. neuron
  • B. nephron
  • C. alveolus
  • D. villus

Question 4

Insulin is secreted by the:

  • A. liver
  • B. thyroid gland
  • C. adrenal gland
  • D. pancreas

Question 5

The smallest bone in the human body is:

  • A. femur
  • B. stapes
  • C. radius
  • D. clavicle

Answers and explanations

  1. C. The pulmonary vein is unusual because it carries oxygen-rich blood, from the lungs to the left atrium. The pulmonary artery carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, which is the opposite of the usual rule that arteries carry oxygenated blood.
  2. A. The liver is the largest gland. The skin is the largest organ of the body, which is a separate question that can use the same wording.
  3. B. Each kidney has about a million nephrons, which filter blood and form urine. The neuron is the unit of the nervous system, the alveolus the unit of the lung and the villus belongs to the small intestine.
  4. D. Insulin is secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas and lowers blood sugar. A shortage of insulin causes diabetes mellitus.
  5. B. The stapes (stirrup) in the middle ear is the smallest bone. The femur in the thigh is the longest and strongest.

How to prepare zoology

Make a one-line card for every organ: where it is, what it does, what it secretes. Fifteen organs fit on three pages. Then add the gland and hormone table: pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovary and testis, each with one hormone and one condition caused by too little or too much.

Learn the "largest, smallest, longest" facts together, since they make easy and common questions: largest gland (liver), largest organ (skin), longest bone (femur), smallest bone (stapes), largest artery (aorta), longest cell (neuron). One list covers six questions.

Include the blood groups and a couple of basic numbers: normal body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius, an adult has 206 bones, and a healthy heart beats about 72 times a minute at rest. Skip detailed biochemistry. For the related topic of diseases, see TNPSC nutrition, health and diseases practice, and for the plant side of biology go to TNPSC botany practice.
