In the Group 4 2026 notification, BC(OBCM), BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST candidates who hold a general educational qualification higher than the minimum have no maximum age limit for most posts. The notification marks this with a "#" in its age table. It does not apply to VAO, Forest Guard or Forest Watcher, and it does not apply to Others.

The rule in full

QuestionAnswer in the Group 4 2026 notification
Who benefits?BC(OBCM), BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST candidates
What qualification?A general educational qualification higher than the minimum, for example HSC or a degree for a post that needs only SSLC
Which posts? Most posts, marked "#" in the age table
Which posts are excluded?VAO, Forest Guard and Forest Watcher
What does "no maximum" mean? You must not have completed 60 years
Do Others benefit?No

The minimum educational qualification for most Group 4 posts is a pass in SSLC. A degree must follow the order of 10th, then HSC or diploma, then the undergraduate course.

Why it matters

The ordinary age limits in Group 4 2026 are 30 for Others, 32 for BC(OBCM), BCM and MBC/DC, and 35 for SC, SC(A) and ST on most SSLC-level posts. A reserved-category candidate with a degree can apply long after those ages. The age is simply capped at the 60-year limit. See no maximum age limit for what that phrase means.

Examples

  • An SC candidate aged 38 with a degree applies for Junior Assistant. The SC limit of 35 would rule out the candidate, but the degree is higher than the SSLC minimum, so there is no maximum age limit and the application stands.
  • A BC candidate aged 41 with a degree applies for VAO. The rule does not cover VAO, where the reserved-category limit is 40, so the candidate is over the limit.
  • An Others candidate aged 33 with a degree applies for Junior Assistant. The rule is for reserved categories, so the Others limit of 30 applies.

What to check before you rely on it

  1. Confirm your category in the age table and find the "#" mark against your post.
  2. Make sure the higher qualification is a general educational one, as the notification says, and that it follows the 10th, HSC or diploma, degree order.
  3. Keep the certificates ready, since age and qualification are checked at certificate verification.
  4. Use the right date for age. See age reckoning date.

The age limits for each category are in TNPSC age limit and eligibility and the VAO guide.
