The five-year government service rule in TNPSC
On this page
The five-year service rule in TNPSC notifications says that candidates in the "Others" category who have worked for 5 years or more in central or state government service are not eligible to apply. It is set out in the Group 4 2026 notification (paragraph 4.5.1), and similar conditions are reported for the Group 1 and Group 2 recruitments, so check the eligibility paragraph of the notification you apply to.
The rule at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who is barred? | "Others" candidates with 5 or more years of central or state government service |
| Does it bar reserved categories? | The Group 4 notification states the bar for Others only |
| What counts? | Service under the central or state government, as the notification words it |
| Where is it stated? | The eligibility conditions in the notification (para 4.5.1 in Group 4 2026) |
Whether service in a board, corporation or other public body counts is decided by the notification's wording, so check how it defines government service for your case.
Why the rule exists
The notification does not give a reason. Treat the rule as an eligibility condition, like age or qualification, and not as a penalty. It is the kind of line that is easy to miss in the eligibility paragraph, and it matters most to serving employees who are thinking of moving to a better post through TNPSC.
How it interacts with other rules
- Age. A candidate in the Others category already faces the lowest age limit, 30 for most Group 4 posts as on 01.07.2026. See age reckoning date.
- Maximum age relaxations such as no maximum age limit apply to reserved categories and do not remove this condition for Others.
- Verification. Your service record can be checked at certificate verification, so declare your service honestly in the application.
An example
A candidate in the Others category has worked for 6 years as a clerk in a state government department and applies for Group 4. Under the rule in the Group 4 2026 notification, the candidate is not eligible. Another Others candidate with 3 years of service is not affected by this rule. A reserved-category candidate with 6 years of service is also not barred by this paragraph, though the other eligibility conditions still apply.
For the whole set of eligibility conditions see TNPSC age limit and eligibility.
