Ex-serviceman in TNPSC recruitment
On this page
In TNPSC notifications, "ex-servicemen" are former members of the armed forces who qualify under the definition and service conditions in the notification. They get a higher age limit and two free fee chances. A reservation for ex-servicemen exists in some TNPSC recruitments but not in all, and it does not apply to Group 1.
Age limits in recent notifications
| Notification | Others | Reserved categories |
|---|---|---|
| Group 4, 2026 (most SSLC-level posts and VAO) | 48 | 53 |
| Group 2/2A, 2025 (most posts) | 50 | No maximum age limit for most posts |
| Group 1, 2025 | 50 | 55 |
The Group 4 figures are for the standard posts. Other posts, such as Executive Officer Grade IV, have their own limits, so read the table for the post you want. "Reserved categories" means BC(OBCM), BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST, as in BC, MBC, SC, SC(A) and ST categories.
Fee concession
Ex-servicemen get two free chances, which means two applications for which the exam fee is waived. Each application that claims the concession uses up one free chance, whichever post it is for. See fee concession.
Reservation
Reservation for ex-servicemen applies to some groups only. The Group 1 notification does not apply it, although it lists an age concession. In other notifications, the reservation annexure sets out the share and the posts.
An example
An ex-serviceman in the Others category, aged 45, applies for a Junior Assistant post in Group 4 2026. The limit for Others in civilians is 30, but the ex-serviceman limit is 48, so he is within the age limit. If he claims the fee concession, this application uses one of his two free chances. A second claim in a later recruitment uses the other, and a third application would pay the fee.
What to prepare
- Keep your discharge documents and service records ready, since the claim is checked at certificate verification.
- Compare the age row in each notification. Do not carry the Group 4 figure to Group 1 or Group 2.
- Remember that the false-claim penalty (rejection and one year's debarment) is stated for fee concessions.
