Community certificate for TNPSC exams
On this page
A community certificate is the official document, issued by the revenue authority, that records which community you belong to. In a TNPSC application you declare a category such as BC, MBC, SC or ST, and the certificate is what proves it at certificate verification. Reservation, age limit and fee concession all follow from that declared category.
What depends on your community
The community you declare changes several things in the same application.
| Item | How the category affects it |
|---|---|
| Age limit | In the Group 4 2026 notification, most SSLC-level posts allow Others up to 30, BC(OBCM), BCM, MBC/DC up to 32 and SC, SC(A), ST up to 35 |
| Reservation | Vacancies are earmarked by community shares under the communal rotation |
| Fee concession | SC, SC(A) and ST candidates are fully exempt; BC(OBCM), BCM and MBC/DC have three free chances |
| Group 1 prelims minimum | 90 for reserved categories and 120 for Others |
Common mismatches to avoid
- Wrong category name. The notification lists BC(OBCM), BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST as separate categories. A BC certificate cannot support an MBC claim. See BC, MBC, SC, SC(A) and ST categories.
- Name or date of birth that differs from your SSLC details in the OTR.
- Claiming a concession you cannot document. TNPSC states that a false fee-concession claim means rejection and one year's debarment.
Before you apply
- Read the category list in the notification and match it to your certificate.
- Check that the community name, your name and your parent's name are the same as in your school records.
- Keep a scan ready, and read the notification's instructions on which certificate format is accepted before the last date.
A certificate for a community does not replace other proofs. Differently-abled candidates, ex-servicemen and destitute widows have their own claims.
An example
An applicant from the MBC category applies for a Group 4 post for which the age limit for Others is 30 and for MBC/DC is 32. At 31 years, and with no qualification above SSLC, the applicant is eligible only because of the MBC/DC category. If the certificate held says BC rather than MBC, the claim would not stand at verification, and the application could be rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues the community certificate?
The revenue authority in your area. Check the notification for the format TNPSC accepts.
Do I need a community certificate if I am in the Others category?
Others is the category for candidates who claim no community concession, so there is no reserved-category claim to prove. Follow the notification for any other documents it asks for.
Does the certificate decide my age relaxation?
It decides which row of the age table applies to you. Your qualification can change the limit in some cases, see higher qualification age relaxation.
