CCSE: Combined Civil Services Examination
On this page
CCSE stands for Combined Civil Services Examination. It is the name TNPSC gives to its main recruitment series for civil-service posts, and a Roman numeral after it tells you the group: CCSE-I is Group 1, CCSE-II is Group 2 and 2A, and CCSE-IV is Group 4. When you see CCSE on a notification, hall ticket or press release, the numeral tells you which exam it is.
CCSE numbers and the groups they cover
| Name on TNPSC documents | Group | Notification cited on this site | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCSE-I | Group 1 | No. 04/2025, Advt No. 706, dated 01.04.2025 | Degree |
| CCSE-II (Group II and IIA) | Group 2 and Group 2A | No. 11/2025, Advt No. 713, dated 15.07.2025 | Degree |
| CCSE-IV | Group 4 | No. 11/2026, Advt No. 747, dated 06.10.2026 | SSLC, some posts higher |
TNPSC's annual planner lists the same three entries as "CCSE-I (Group I)", "CCSE-II (Group II and IIA)" and "CCSE-IV (Group IV)". Technical recruitment runs under a different series, the Combined Technical Services Exam.
How to use the label
- Match the number to your target. If the posts you want are Deputy Collector or DSP, you want CCSE-I. If they are Assistant, Sub Registrar Grade-II or Probation Officer, CCSE-II. If they are VAO, Junior Assistant, Typist or Steno-Typist, CCSE-IV.
- Notices for one CCSE do not apply to another. A hall ticket notice for CCSE-IV says nothing about the Group 2 schedule.
- Posts move between groups over time. Executive Officer Grade IV, once its own Group 8 exam, is now recruited through Group 4, and Executive Officer Grade III is in Group 2A in the 2025 notification.
An example
Suppose you read: "Notification No. 11/2026 (CCSE-IV), Advt No. 747". The 11/2026 is the notification serial for the year and the advertisement number, 747, is a separate running number. See TNPSC notification. Both identify the same recruitment, and the exam is Group 4, scheduled for 10.01.2027.
For the full picture of the groups, their posts and how interviews differ, read TNPSC groups explained. To prepare for a particular CCSE, start with the Group 4 syllabus, Group 2 syllabus or Group 1 syllabus.
