Do I need to know Tamil to apply for TNPSC?
On this page
Yes. TNPSC notifications require adequate knowledge of Tamil on the date of the notification. You can show it by having studied Tamil as a language, by having attended a Tamil-medium high school, or by holding the TNPSC Second Class Language Test in Tamil. If you have none of these, you must pass that test within two years of appointment.
How you can meet the requirement
Notification No. 11/2026 (Group 4, para 4.4) accepts any one of the following:
| Route | What it means |
|---|---|
| SSLC, HSC or a degree with Tamil as a language | Tamil was one of your subjects at that level |
| High school in Tamil medium | You studied in Tamil medium at high school level |
| Second Class Language Test (Full Test) in Tamil | A test conducted by TNPSC |
Similar clauses appear in the Group 1 and Group 2/2A notifications we reviewed. Exact wording varies, so read the paragraph in yours.
If you do not meet it
A candidate who does not have one of these on the notification date can still apply, but must pass the Second Class Language Test (Full Test) in Tamil within two years of appointment. If you do not, you are discharged from service. Treat this as a firm deadline.
This is separate from the Tamil papers
Meeting the language condition does not exempt you from the exam's Tamil content:
- Group 4: Part A is the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test, 150 marks, with a 60-mark gate. See is Tamil compulsory for Group 4.
- Group 1 and Group 2/2A: the mains include a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test of 100 marks with a pass mark of 40.
Persons with benchmark disabilities have exemptions in some of these papers. The Tamil Eligibility Test guide describes the paper, and writing TNPSC in English shows where English is allowed.
If you come from outside Tamil Nadu or an English-medium school
The rule does not mention nativity in the paragraphs we have read; it asks for knowledge of Tamil. If your school records do not show Tamil, plan the Second Class Language Test and start your Tamil study early. PrepMatic lets TNPSC aspirants choose Tamil as the exam language for practice.
