Computer awareness practice questions for bank exams
On this page
Computer awareness tests the basics of how computers, networks and office software work. The questions are factual and short, so focused revision can earn marks quickly in the exams that still carry a computer section. The five questions below cover the commonest areas: memory, shortcuts, networking, security and the number system.
Where computer questions appear
Not every bank exam has one, so check before you spend time on it. The figures below come from the latest official notifications and handouts, and the pattern may change in a later cycle.
| Exam stage | Computer content |
|---|---|
| SBI PO mains | Reasoning and Computer Aptitude, 40 questions, 60 marks, 50 minutes |
| SBI Junior Associate mains | Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude, 50 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes |
| IBPS RRB mains (Scale I, Office Assistant) | Computer Knowledge, 40 questions, 20 marks, 15 minutes |
| RBI Assistant mains | Computer Knowledge, 40 questions, 40 marks, 20 minutes |
| IBPS PO mains and IBPS CSA mains | No section named computer in the 2026 notifications |
Commonly tested topics
- Hardware and memory: CPU, RAM, ROM, cache, storage units
- Software: system and application software, operating systems
- Number systems: binary, octal, hexadecimal conversions
- Networking and the internet: LAN, WAN, routers, IP addresses, browsers, email
- MS Office: shortcuts in Word and Excel, common functions
- Security: malware types, firewalls, phishing, passwords, encryption
Five practice questions
Question 1
Which of the following is volatile memory?
- A. ROM
- B. RAM
- C. Hard disk
- D. Pen drive
Question 2
Which key combination undoes the last action in most MS Office programs?
- A. Ctrl + Y
- B. Ctrl + X
- C. Ctrl + Z
- D. Ctrl + U
Question 3
Which device connects two different networks and forwards data packets using IP addresses?
- A. Router
- B. Hub
- C. Repeater
- D. Bridge
Question 4
A program that looks like useful software but secretly carries out harmful actions is called a:
- A. Worm
- B. Spyware
- C. Firewall
- D. Trojan horse
Question 5
What is the binary equivalent of the decimal number 13?
- A. 1011
- B. 1101
- C. 1110
- D. 1001
Answers and explanations
- B. RAM loses its contents when the power is switched off, so it is volatile. ROM, a hard disk and a pen drive keep their data without power.
- C. Ctrl + Z is undo. Ctrl + Y repeats or redoes an action, Ctrl + X cuts the selection and Ctrl + U underlines it.
- A. A router joins separate networks and uses IP addresses to forward packets. A hub and a repeater work only inside one network segment, and a bridge connects segments using hardware (MAC) addresses.
- D. A Trojan horse is disguised as a legitimate program. A worm spreads by copying itself, spyware gathers information secretly, and a firewall is a protective tool, not malware.
- B. 13 = 8 + 4 + 1, which is 1101 in binary. Check: 1×8 + 1×4 + 0×2 + 1×1 = 13.
How to prepare computer awareness
- Check the exam first. If your target exam has no computer section, such as IBPS PO mains in the 2026 notification, spend your time elsewhere.
- Learn by lists. Memory types, network devices, malware types and shortcuts are all lists, so revise them as tables.
- Use the software. Open Word and Excel for 15 minutes and try the shortcuts and functions yourself. They are easier to remember than to read.
- Learn binary conversions with a method. Write the place values 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 and tick the ones you need.
- Revise little and often. An hour a week is a sensible plan, because the facts stay with you through repetition.
- Keep it in proportion. In the RRB mains, computer knowledge carries 20 of 200 marks, against 50 each for reasoning and quantitative aptitude, so protect time for those first.
The wider syllabus is in the computer aptitude guide. The full computer awareness topic test is on PrepMatic (about 15 questions, 30 minutes), and the bank exam hub links each exam's pattern.
