Caselet DI practice questions for bank exams
A caselet gives the data in a short paragraph instead of a table or a graph. You read the sentences, pull out the numbers, and organise them yourself before answering. Caselets are the part of data interpretation that tests reading as much as arithmetic, which is why many students find them harder than they look. The practice set below is hypothetical.
The caselet
A bank has 2,400 employees in three cadres: officers, clerks and sub-staff. Officers are 25% of all employees. Of the remaining employees, 60% are clerks and the rest are sub-staff. Among the officers, 40% are women. Half of the clerks are women. Among the sub-staff, 25% are women.
Five practice questions
Question 1
How many clerks does the bank have?
- A. 960
- B. 1,020
- C. 1,080
- D. 1,200
Question 2
How many women work in the bank in total?
- A. 900
- B. 960
- C. 1,020
- D. 1,080
Question 3
What percentage of the bank's employees are men?
- A. 60%
- B. 62.5%
- C. 65%
- D. 66 2/3%
Question 4
What is the ratio of male officers to male sub-staff?
- A. 1 : 2
- B. 3 : 4
- C. 3 : 2
- D. 2 : 3
Question 5
If 40 male clerks are promoted to officers, what percentage of the officers will then be men?
- A. 56.25%
- B. 60%
- C. 62.5%
- D. 66.7%
Answers and explanations
First build the table of the data in the passage.
| Cadre | Total | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|---|
| Officers | 600 | 240 | 360 |
| Clerks | 1,080 | 540 | 540 |
| Sub-staff | 720 | 180 | 540 |
| Total | 2,400 | 960 | 1,440 |
- C. Officers are 25% of 2,400, which is 600. The remaining 1,800 employees include 60% clerks, which is 1,080.
- B. Women are 40% of 600 officers = 240, half of 1,080 clerks = 540, and 25% of 720 sub-staff = 180. The total is 240 + 540 + 180 = 960.
- A. Men are 2,400 − 960 = 1,440, which is 1,440 ÷ 2,400 = 60%.
- D. Male officers are 600 − 240 = 360, and male sub-staff are 720 − 180 = 540. The ratio is 360 : 540 = 2 : 3.
- C. After 40 male clerks move up, officers number 640, of whom 360 + 40 = 400 are men. So 400 ÷ 640 = 62.5%.
How to prepare caselet DI
- Underline each number as you read. Write the base for every percentage ("25% of all", "60% of the remaining"). Misreading "of the remaining" for "of all" is the commonest error.
- Build a small table before answering anything. The table in the answers above is exactly what to draw in 90 seconds. The questions then become look-ups.
- Keep the numbers consistent. Check that the cadres add up to 2,400 and the women and men add up to each cadre. Such checks catch slips before they spread.
- Take it one sentence at a time. Do not skim for "key numbers". Each sentence adds one row or column to the table.
- Expect missing information in harder sets. Some caselets leave a value to be found from a ratio or a total. Set it as x, fill the table with expressions in x, and solve once.
- Do modifying questions last. Questions that change the data, such as Question 5, need the final table first.
A caselet with five questions is a 7-to-9-minute job at mains level, including the table. If you struggle to translate words into numbers, practise with ratio and proportion questions first.
