Blood relation practice questions for bank exams
On this page
Blood relation questions describe how people in a family are connected and ask how one person relates to another. Blood relations is a commonly tested reasoning topic in bank exams. The trick is to turn every sentence into a family tree and then read the answer off the tree. Try the five questions below, including a coded one of the type that appears in mains.
Relations worth memorising
| Description | Relation |
|---|---|
| Father's father or mother's father | Grandfather |
| Father's brother | Paternal uncle |
| Mother's brother | Maternal uncle |
| Father's sister | Paternal aunt |
| Mother's sister | Maternal aunt |
| Child of an uncle or aunt | Cousin |
| Son's wife | Daughter-in-law |
| Wife's or husband's mother | Mother-in-law |
| Wife's brother or sister's husband | Brother-in-law |
| Brother's or sister's son | Nephew |
When a person's gender is not stated, the question usually asks for a relation that does not depend on it, such as "cousin" or "sibling".
Five practice questions

Question 2

- B. Uncle
- C. Cousin
- D. Nephew

- B. Aunt
- C. Great-grandmother
- D. Grandmother
Question 4

- B. Sister-in-law
- C. Mother-in-law
- D. Aunt
Question 5
A man looks at a photograph and says, "Brothers and sisters I have none, but that man's father is my father's son." Whose photograph is it?
- A. His own
- B. His son's
- C. His nephew's
- D. His father's
Answers and explanations
- C. Ravi's father's only son is Ravi himself, since Ravi is a man and the only son. So the girl is Ravi's daughter.
- A. P is the brother of Q, and Q is the mother of R, so P is R's maternal uncle. R is the father of S, which makes P the maternal uncle of S's father. That is the great-uncle, or grand-uncle, of S.
- D. P is the mother of Q. Q is the brother of R, so P is also the mother of R. R is the father of S. So P is the mother of S's father, which means P is S's grandmother.
- C. Meena's mother's only daughter is Meena. So the woman's son is Meena's husband, and the woman is Meena's mother-in-law.
- B. "My father's son" is the speaker himself, because he has no brothers. So "that man's father is me", which makes the man in the photograph his son.
How to prepare blood relation questions
- Rewrite the nested phrase from the inside out. In Question 5, "my father's son" becomes "me" (given no brothers), then the sentence reads "that man's father is me".
- Draw a tree. Use a square for males and a circle for females, a horizontal line for marriage and a vertical line for children. Put the speaker at the bottom.
- Learn the coded-symbol method. Write each symbol's meaning at the top, then translate the expression one pair at a time as in Question 3.
- Watch for the unknown gender. Names do not always give the gender, so use only what the sentence states, such as "brother" or "mother".
- Remember siblings share parents. If Q is the brother of R and P is Q's mother, P is also R's mother.
- Convert to a standard relation last. Only after the tree is drawn should you attach the word "uncle", "nephew" or "grandmother".
Allow 45 to 60 seconds for a plain question and 90 seconds for a coded one. The related topic direction sense trains the same habit of drawing before answering.
