A table DI set gives a grid of numbers and asks five or so questions on it: percentages, ratios, averages, differences and comparisons. The numbers are fixed, so the whole skill is knowing which cells to use and how to calculate quickly. The data set below is a practice set, not real bank data. In IBPS PO mains, the Data Analysis and Interpretation test has 40 questions for 60 marks in 45 minutes, and SBI PO mains has 30 questions for 60 marks in the same time, so speed on sets like this matters.

The data set

A bank's five Chennai branches received loan applications in one year. The table shows the applications, the loans approved and the total amount sanctioned.

BranchApplications receivedLoans approvedAmount sanctioned (₹ lakh)
Anna Nagar4003001,500
T. Nagar5003502,100
Adyar6004503,150
Velachery2501901,140
Tambaram4503602,160

Five practice questions

Question 1

Which branch has the highest percentage of applications approved?

  • A. Anna Nagar
  • B. Adyar
  • C. Velachery
  • D. Tambaram

Question 2

What is the overall approval percentage across all five branches?

  • A. 70%
  • B. 72.5%
  • C. 75%
  • D. 77.5%

Question 3

What is the average amount sanctioned per approved loan at Adyar?

  • A. ₹5.25 lakh
  • B. ₹7 lakh
  • C. ₹7.5 lakh
  • D. ₹8 lakh

Question 4

What is the ratio of rejected applications at Anna Nagar to rejected applications at Velachery?

  • A. 5 : 3
  • B. 3 : 2
  • C. 2 : 1
  • D. 7 : 4

Question 5

By what percentage is the amount sanctioned at T. Nagar more than that at Anna Nagar?

  • A. 28.6%
  • B. 40%
  • C. 45%
  • D. 50%

Answers and explanations

  1. D. The approval percentages are Anna Nagar 300 ÷ 400 = 75%, T. Nagar 70%, Adyar 450 ÷ 600 = 75%, Velachery 190 ÷ 250 = 76%, and Tambaram 360 ÷ 450 = 80%. Tambaram is the highest.
  2. C. Total applications are 400 + 500 + 600 + 250 + 450 = 2,200, and total approvals are 300 + 350 + 450 + 190 + 360 = 1,650. So 1,650 ÷ 2,200 = 75%.
  3. B. Adyar sanctioned ₹3,150 lakh across 450 approved loans, so the average is 3,150 ÷ 450 = ₹7 lakh. The figure ₹5.25 lakh wrongly divides by the 600 applications.
  4. A. Rejected applications are Anna Nagar 400 − 300 = 100 and Velachery 250 − 190 = 60. The ratio is 100 : 60 = 5 : 3.
  5. B. The difference is 2,100 − 1,500 = 600, and the base is Anna Nagar's 1,500. So 600 ÷ 1,500 × 100 = 40%. The figure 28.6% uses T. Nagar as the base, which is the wrong direction.

How to prepare table DI

  • Read the headings before the numbers. Check units (₹ lakh here), the year and what each column counts. A unit slip costs a whole question.
  • Calculate only the columns the question needs. Do not fill a full percentage grid unless several questions use it. For Question 1, comparing 190 ÷ 250 with 360 ÷ 450 is enough.
  • Compare ratios by cross-multiplication or by benchmarks. Compare against 75%: Velachery is slightly above, Tambaram clearly above.
  • Use approximation when the options are far apart. If options differ by more than 5%, round to the nearest ten and move on.
  • Watch the base. "More than" and "less than" percentages use the second item as the base. Questions 3 and 5 both include a wrong-base option.
  • Time yourself by set. In mains, 45 minutes for 40 questions is under 70 seconds a question. A set of five questions should take about six minutes.

Revise the percentage and ratio rules from percentage before attempting longer sets, and move on to bar graph DI once tables feel routine.

The full table DI topic test is on PrepMatic (about 15 questions, 30 minutes). The data interpretation guide covers every set type, and the bank exam hub links each exam's pattern.
