QNu Labs, working with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N) and IIT Gandhinagar, has demonstrated India's first free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link at a scale of 5.56 km. The field trial took place on the night of 27 to 28 September 2026, and the Ministry of Electronics and IT announced it on 3 October 2026.

Key facts

PointDetail
Link distance5.56 km, between BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar
TrialNight of 27 to 28 September 2026
Quantum bit error rateBelow 5%
Secure key rate230 to 260 bits per second
QKD deviceArmos, by QNu Labs
Post-quantum platformVedic Kavach, by BISAG-N

How it worked

Using QNu Labs' Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking system, the trial achieved a stable error rate. The secure keys were fed into BISAG-N's Vedic Kavach platform, which uses post-quantum cryptography with quantum random number generation, and test messages were encrypted and decrypted end to end.

The design combines two layers of security: hardware-based QKD over free-space optical channels, and software-based post-quantum cryptography. If the physical quantum channel is briefly unavailable, the software layer keeps the system resilient. BISAG-N is an autonomous scientific society under MeitY. QNu Labs says the result paves the way for longer-distance quantum-secure networks and satellite-based quantum communication.

Why it matters for exams

Quantum communication, QKD and the institutions behind it are rising science and technology current affairs topics for TNPSC and computer awareness for banking exams. Know the full form (Quantum Key Distribution), the distance and the partners. Revise with the general science guide.
