On 6 October 2026 the Union Cabinet approved the Government of India's commitment of ₹10,000 crore to set up the SME Growth Fund (SGF). The fund will make direct equity investments in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to help them grow into larger, globally competitive firms. It follows Para 28 of the Union Budget 2026-27.

How the fund works

The government will commit an aggregate ₹10,000 crore to an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) set up under the SGF framework. The release identifies a structural gap: existing equity funds mostly back early-stage firms and micro enterprises, so small and medium firms that want to scale find it hard to raise long-term risk capital.

The capital is meant for firms at an inflection point: adding capacity, adopting advanced technology, entering export markets or making acquisitions. The government expects it to improve productivity and export competitiveness and to support jobs in smaller cities.

Why it matters for exams

New schemes and funds, with the amount, the ministry route and the target group, are classic banking awareness and general awareness questions for IBPS, SBI and RBI Grade B.
