Industrial clusters of Tamil Nadu: which town is known for what
On this page
Tamil Nadu is one of India's most industrialised states, and its industry is organised in town-based clusters: textiles at Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Karur, fireworks and printing at Sivakasi, cars and electronics around Chennai, Sriperumbudur and Hosur, and leather at Ambur and Vaniyambadi. Questions almost always ask "which town is known for this industry", so this page is built as a town-to-industry table.

Industry themes
Textiles. Spinning, weaving and garments run in a belt from Coimbatore through Tiruppur and Erode to Karur. The state has historically had the largest number of spinning mills in the country. Cotton from the black soil districts feeds this chain; see major crops of Tamil Nadu.
Automobiles. The Chennai region has one of India's largest vehicle and auto-component clusters, anchored by plants at Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Maraimalai Nagar, and extending to Hosur in the northwest. Many global brands assemble here for both domestic sale and export.
Electronics. The Sriperumbudur and Hosur belts have attracted electronics manufacturers, making it one of India's leading electronics-exporting states.
Leather. Tanning is concentrated in the Palar valley towns of Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Ranipet and Vellore, and in Dindigul.
Fireworks and printing. Sivakasi dominates India's fireworks, match and offset-printing industries.
Engineering and pumps. Coimbatore leads in pump sets and engineering goods, and Tiruchirappalli has heavy engineering built around BHEL.

Why this appears in Unit V
Town-to-industry questions come under the Tamil Nadu economy part of Unit V. The Commission's January 2022 Group 4 scheme also listed industrial clusters under "Geography of Tamil Nadu and its impact on Economic growth", per the development administration in Tamil Nadu guide. The 2026 notification groups the topics differently, so check Annexure III. For national context see the Indian economy guide.
How to revise
Make a two-column list of town and industry and say each line out loud: Tiruppur, knitwear; Sivakasi, fireworks. Then add the nickname and the district. After a week, cover one column and recall the other. Districts of Tamil Nadu has the same facts organised by district.
