Seaports of Tamil Nadu: three major ports and the minor ones
On this page
Tamil Nadu has three major ports as of 2026: Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port at Ennore (both near Chennai) and V.O. Chidambaranar Port at Thoothukudi in the south. The Government of India controls the major ports, while the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board looks after the state's smaller ports. The state has a coastline of roughly 1,076 km, a figure commonly quoted by the state, and the exact length differs between sources.
Major ports
| Port | Location (district) | Key facts |
|---|---|---|
| Chennai Port | Chennai | An artificial harbour dating to the 1880s; cars, containers and general cargo; one of the oldest ports on the east coast |
| Kamarajar Port (Ennore) | Thiruvallur | Commissioned in 2001 as Ennore Port Limited, India's first corporatised major port; renamed Kamarajar Port in 2014; coal, iron ore, cars |
| V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Thoothukudi) | Thoothukudi | Artificial deep-water harbour; declared a major port in 1974; named after freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, who started the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company |
Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port are close together on the northern coast, and V.O. Chidambaranar Port is the main southern gateway. Together they serve the industrial belts described in industrial clusters of Tamil Nadu.
Minor and other ports
- Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. Long-established minor ports on the Coromandel coast, run through the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board.
- Kattupalli. A privately operated port north of Chennai.
- Small ports. Several smaller ports and fishing harbours along the coast serve local trade and fishing.
The Maritime Board publishes the current list of non-major ports. The number of minor ports can change, so it is not quoted here.
Ancient and historic Tamil ports
| Port | Associated kingdom | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Korkai | Pandya | Pearl fishery and early sea trade, near the Tamirabarani mouth |
| Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam) | Chola | Described in Sangam literature as a great port; Cauvery meets the sea here |
| Mamallapuram | Pallava | Port and temple town on the Chengalpattu coast |
| Nagapattinam | Chola | Trade with Southeast Asia |
Roman trade with the Tamil country is documented at Arikamedu (near Puducherry), but that site is outside Tamil Nadu's present boundary.
Coastal districts
Fourteen districts touch the sea: Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari. The east coast is the Coromandel Coast, and the south has the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. Chennai also has the Marina, one of the longest urban beaches in India. See districts of Tamil Nadu for headquarters and other facts.

Why this appears in Unit V
The Commission's January 2022 Group 4 scheme listed "Geography of Tamil Nadu and its impact on Economic growth" under Unit V, and ports sit squarely in that line. Questions on ports are almost always one-line factual items. The development administration in Tamil Nadu guide explains the unit, and airports of Tamil Nadu covers the air side. The 2026 notification groups the topics differently, so check Annexure III.
How to revise
Learn the three major ports with the district for each, then the name story for each (Ennore to Kamarajar, Tuticorin to V.O. Chidambaranar). Then pair the ancient ports with their kingdoms. The TNPSC geography guide shows the coastal geography.
