Major crops of Tamil Nadu: crops, districts and seasons
On this page
Paddy is the main food crop of Tamil Nadu, grown chiefly in the Cauvery delta, and the state's other major crops include millets, pulses, groundnut, sugarcane, cotton, banana, coconut and plantation crops such as tea and coffee. Thanjavur is called the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu. Because rainfall is uneven and the north-east monsoon is the chief rainy season, irrigation by canals, tanks and wells decides where each crop grows.

Paddy seasons
Rice is grown in three overlapping seasons, named in Tamil.
| Season | Sowing and harvest | Water source |
|---|---|---|
| Kuruvai | Sown around June, harvested in September | Mettur Dam water from the Cauvery |
| Samba | Sown around August, harvested around January | Cauvery water and the north-east monsoon |
| Thaladi | Sown around September to October, harvested around February | North-east monsoon |
Mettur Dam usually opens on 12 June to support Kuruvai in the delta, though the date moves when storage is low. Aadi Perukku, observed on the 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi, celebrates rising river waters and the start of sowing. See dams in Tamil Nadu for the irrigation side.
The seven agro-climatic zones
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) divides the state into seven agro-climatic zones.
| Zone | Character |
|---|---|
| North Eastern Zone | Coastal north; paddy, groundnut |
| North Western Zone | Dry interior; millets, groundnut, mango |
| Western Zone | Cotton, coconut, sugarcane and turmeric under irrigation |
| Cauvery Delta Zone | Rice, pulses and banana |
| Southern Zone | Dry black and red soils; cotton, millets, chilli |
| High Rainfall Zone | Kanniyakumari; rubber, coconut, banana and paddy |
| High Altitude and Hilly Zone | Nilgiris and Kodaikanal; tea, coffee, vegetables, spices |
Policy points worth knowing
- Separate agriculture budget. Tamil Nadu presented its first separate agriculture budget in 2021.
- Cauvery Delta Protected Special Agricultural Zone. A 2020 state act protects the delta's farmland from mining and hydrocarbon projects.
- Uzhavar Sandhai. The state's farmers' markets, where growers sell vegetables and fruits directly to consumers, started in 1999.
- Crop insurance and procurement. The state procures paddy from farmers through its Civil Supplies Corporation, and farmers can insure crops under the national scheme.

How to revise
Combine this page with the soils of Tamil Nadu and climate and monsoon of Tamil Nadu pages: soil plus rainfall explains the crop in nearly every case. Then link a crop to an industry (sugarcane to sugar mills, cotton to textiles) using industrial clusters of Tamil Nadu. The Indian economy guide covers the national agriculture topics.
