GI tags of Tamil Nadu: products, districts and what a GI means
On this page
Tamil Nadu has more than 70 products registered with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag as of late 2025, one of the largest lists among Indian states, and the count keeps rising with each yearly batch. The GI Registry that grants the tags is based in Chennai. A GI tells buyers that a product comes from a particular place and has qualities that depend on that place. The table gives the best-known Tamil Nadu GI products and the district each is linked to.

How GI protection works
India registers GIs under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which came into force in 2003. The registry is in Chennai. Darjeeling tea was the first Indian product to receive a GI tag, in the mid-2000s. A registration is valid for ten years and can be renewed. Only registered authorised users from the named area may use the GI, though anyone can buy and sell the product. A GI is different from a trademark, because it belongs to a region and its producers collectively, not to one company.
Short notes on most-asked items
- Silk. Kancheepuram, Arani and Thirubuvanam are the three silk GIs to remember; Kancheepuram is the best known.
- Thanjavur. The district has the most handicraft GIs: painting, doll, art plate, veena, Swamimalai bronze and Nachiarkoil lamp.
- Temple food. Palani Panchamirtham (2019) and Srivilliputhur Palkova (2019) are the two food GIs most often asked.
- Tea. Nilgiri Orthodox Tea.
- Flowers. Madurai Malli.
- Hills. Sirumalai and Virupakshi hill banana, both in Dindigul district.
- Chennai registry. The Geographical Indications Registry sits in Chennai.
Why it matters for exams
GI questions fit the Unit V theme of the Tamil Nadu economy, because they connect craft, agriculture and local industry to districts. A standard question gives a product and asks for the district, or gives a district and asks for the GI product. Use the table above to practise both ways. Pair it with districts of Tamil Nadu and industrial clusters of Tamil Nadu. The development administration in Tamil Nadu guide places these in the wider syllabus.
How to revise
Learn the table by district, not by product: Thanjavur (seven, counting Thirubuvanam silk), Dindigul (four, counting locks), Madurai (two), Nilgiris (two), Erode (two), Kancheepuram. Then add one new GI every week from the news. Use the TNPSC current affairs guide to track new tags, since a recent GI is a classic current-affairs item.
