Minerals of Tamil Nadu: what is mined and where
On this page
Tamil Nadu's most important mineral is lignite, mined at Neyveli in Cuddalore district, and the state holds most of India's lignite resources. Other well-known minerals are magnesite and bauxite around Salem, limestone in Ariyalur and Tiruchirappalli, beach-sand minerals on the south coast, granite, and sea salt. The state has no significant coal, so lignite and imported coal feed its thermal power stations.
Minerals and where they are found
| Mineral | Where | Key fact |
|---|---|---|
| Lignite | Neyveli (Cuddalore); also Mannargudi (Thanjavur and Tiruvarur) and Jayamkondam (Ariyalur) | Neyveli is mined by NLC India Limited; the state has the largest lignite resources in India |
| Magnesite | Salem district | Salem is the main magnesite area of the state |
| Bauxite | Shevaroy hills (Salem), Kolli hills (Namakkal), Palani hills | Used for aluminium |
| Iron ore | Kanjamalai (Salem), Kolli hills, Tirthamalai (Dharmapuri) | Kanjamalai ore is in Salem district, where SAIL's Salem Steel Plant stands |
| Limestone | Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Madurai | Basis of the cement industry |
| Beach sand minerals (ilmenite, garnet, rutile, zircon, monazite) | Coast of Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi | Indian Rare Earths Limited has a unit at Manavalakurichi, Kanniyakumari |
| Granite | Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai and other districts | Exported as blocks and polished stone |
| Salt | Thoothukudi, Vedaranyam, Marakkanam | Sea salt from solar pans; Tamil Nadu is among the top salt producers |
| Gypsum | Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli | Used in cement and agriculture |
| Graphite | Sivagangai | Small deposits |
| Oil and gas | Cauvery basin (Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam) | Small producing fields operated by ONGC |

Lignite and Neyveli
NLC India Limited (originally Neyveli Lignite Corporation, set up in 1956) mines lignite at Neyveli in open-cast mines and burns it in nearby thermal stations. Lignite is a low-grade coal with high moisture, so it is used near the mine instead of being transported over long distances. The power side of this is covered in power plants in Tamil Nadu.
Beach sand minerals
The south coast holds placer deposits of heavy minerals: ilmenite and rutile for titanium, garnet for abrasives, zircon and monazite. Monazite contains thorium and rare earths, so beach-sand mining is regulated under atomic energy rules. The Manavalakurichi unit of Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) in Kanniyakumari district has processed these sands for decades.
State agencies and rules
- Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN). A state government company founded in 1978 that works granite and other minerals.
- Department of Geology and Mining. Grants leases and permits for minor minerals under the state's rules.
- MMDR Act. The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 is the central law for mineral leases.
- District mineral foundations. Funded by mining lease holders to benefit communities in mining areas.
Short notes on most-asked items
- Lignite equals Neyveli, in Cuddalore district.
- Magnesite equals Salem.
- Limestone and cement equals Ariyalur.
- Garnet and ilmenite equals the south coast sands.
- Salt equals Thoothukudi and the east coast pans.
- Ariyalur is also the district of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, which makes it a favourite mixed question. See districts of Tamil Nadu.
How to revise
Make a mineral-to-district chart and keep it next to the map of Tamil Nadu. Pair each mineral with its industry: lignite to power, limestone to cement, magnesite to refractories, beach sands to titanium, granite to export. The industrial clusters of Tamil Nadu page shows where those industries sit, and the TNPSC geography guide covers India-wide minerals.
