An SBI Probationary Officer starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments, in the Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I) scale of ₹48,480 to ₹85,920. The 2026 advertisement states an approximate cost to company (CTC) of about ₹21.97 lakh a year at Mumbai.

The pay scale

The 2026 advertisement prints the JMGS-I scale as:

₹48,480 - 2,000 (7 stages) - 62,480 - 2,340 (2 stages) - 67,160 - 2,680 (7 stages) - 85,920

That means the basic rises by ₹2,000 a year for the first seven increments, then ₹2,340 for two, then ₹2,680 for seven, up to ₹85,920. Basic pay is only the base; allowances are added on top and depend on where you are posted.

What the CTC figure means

The advertisement quotes an approximate CTC of about ₹21.97 lakh at Mumbai. That is the bank's own estimate for a metro posting in the year of the advertisement, not your monthly take-home. In-hand salary is lower, because it is paid after deductions, and it changes with the city you are posted to. Treat the CTC as an upper-end indicator for a metro posting, not a promise.

How it compares

IBPS PO and specialist officer posts use the same basic scale (₹48,480 to ₹85,920), but the allowances follow the rules of whichever bank you are allotted. RBI Grade B starts much higher, at ₹78,450 basic; see RBI Grade B salary. Pre-2024 articles quote a ₹36,000 start for PO, which is out of date.

If you are deciding between officer and clerk roles, the bank PO vs clerk comparison weighs pay, promotion and workload. The paper itself is explained in the SBI PO syllabus and exam pattern.

Pay is revised periodically, so check the current advertisement before relying on any figure.
