Can diploma holders apply for TNPSC Group 4?
On this page
Yes. The minimum qualification for Group 4 is a pass in SSLC (Class 10), and anyone who has a diploma after SSLC clears it. A diploma neither helps nor hurts your eligibility for the exam itself. It matters only for posts that ask for a particular certificate and for the age rule on higher qualifications.
What the notification checks
Notification No. 11/2026 (para 4.2) sets SSLC as the minimum general educational qualification. It also says that where a candidate holds a degree, the qualifications must follow the order of 10th, then Class 12 or diploma, then the undergraduate degree. A diploma-then-degree route is therefore recognised in that order. A diploma without an SSLC pass does not meet the minimum.
Does a diploma count as a "higher qualification"?
For most posts, candidates from BC, MBC, SC and ST categories who hold a general educational qualification higher than the minimum have no maximum age limit (the exceptions are VAO, Forest Guard and Forest Watcher). The notification words this as a general educational qualification, with HSC or a degree as examples. A technical diploma is not obviously covered, so read paras 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 and the footnote marked with a hash against your post before you assume you qualify for the relief.
| Your situation | Group 4 position |
|---|---|
| SSLC plus diploma | Eligible; qualification met |
| Diploma, no SSLC pass | Not eligible; SSLC is the minimum |
| Diploma then degree | Eligible; order is recognised |
| Reserved category with diploma, wanting no maximum age | Check the footnote on higher qualification for your post |
Posts that ask for more
