The GATE 2026 Mechanical Engineering (ME) paper was held on the afternoon of Saturday 14 February 2026, with 65 questions for 100 marks. We read the official paper and key and tallied every question. The paper had no multiple-select questions at all: 45 were single-answer MCQs and 20 were numerical answers worth 38 marks. Applied Mechanics and Design was the heaviest block at 24 marks, and Industrial Engineering gave 10 marks from just five questions.

PaperMechanical Engineering (ME)
Date and sessionSaturday 14 February 2026, afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm)
Size65 questions, 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude (15 marks), 55 subject (85 marks)
Question types45 MCQ, 0 MSQ, 20 NAT
General qualifying mark (official)25.2
Candidates appeared (official)59,612 of 76,823 registered

ME ran in one session, so there was no normalisation. It shared its afternoon session with CE-2, and the two papers carried the same ten General Aptitude questions, as we confirmed by comparing the official papers.

Subject-wise tally

The paper has no subject labels, so this is our own classification, accurate to about one question where topics overlap. We split the 2027 section "Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences" into fluid mechanics and thermodynamics with heat transfer, and the section "Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering" into two rows.

Applied Mechanics and Design here covers engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, theory of machines, vibrations and machine design.

Of the 100 marks, 38 sat in NATs with no negative marking, so the remaining 62 came from MCQs where a blind wrong answer costs marks.

What stood out (our reading)

  • Mathematics was entirely MCQ. All nine questions were single-answer, covering a double integral, the gradient, order and degree of a PDE, Newton-Raphson, trapezoidal rule, a complex logarithm, a PDE solution, a Laplace transform and a probability question.
  • Applied Mechanics and Design carried nearly a quarter of the paper. It combined a rotating-slot block, gear train idler, damping ratio, helical spring stress, gyroscopic moment and welds with beams, hinged structures, a pressure vessel and biaxial stress. Six of the 16 were NATs.
  • Thermal sciences were calculation-heavy. Five of ten were NATs: lumped-capacity cooling of a sphere, radiation between two surfaces, a heat exchanger's overall coefficient, exergy of a hot stream and a heated rigid vessel.
  • Manufacturing mixed old and new. Casting defects and milling fixtures sat beside additive manufacturing (STL file errors), CAD topology (Euler's law for polyhedra), deep drawing and tool life.
  • Industrial Engineering was all two-mark. Its five questions were a linear programme and its dual, job sequencing, exponential smoothing, economic order quantity and a PERT network.
  • Difficulty is our reading, not an official rating. The one-mark questions were mostly standard concepts; the NATs in mechanics and heat transfer needed multi-step calculation. The official General qualifying mark was 25.2, the lowest of the six papers in 2026 that we analysed.

What it means for GATE 2027 preparation

  1. Prioritise Applied Mechanics and Design. It was 24 marks across 16 questions, and its topics (stress, mechanisms, vibrations) feed machine design too.
  2. Practise formulae under pressure. NAT answers come from fast, accurate calculation: heat transfer, thermodynamics and mechanics each had several.
  3. Do not skip Industrial Engineering. Five two-mark questions are 10 marks, and linear programming, scheduling, forecasting, inventory and PERT can each be learned in a few days.
  4. Use the 2027 structure. GATE 2027 lists ME in four sections and fixes Engineering Mathematics at 13 marks, which matches this paper. Compare with the 2025 ME analysis, where manufacturing was 19 marks, and check the ME preparation guide against the revised syllabus.

Using the tally with PrepMatic

PrepMatic's free assessment (about 15 multiple-choice questions, no timer) shows your weakest subjects, a projected score and your readiness percentage. Because ME is calculation-heavy, use PrepMatic's study plan to schedule short, regular sessions from your exam date and daily hours, and log your study time against it. Topic tests (about 15 questions, 30 minutes) test a subject as you finish it. Solve the real ME questions from the official paper linked below, since PrepMatic's practice questions are AI-generated.
