The GATE 2025 Mechanical Engineering (ME) paper was held on the forenoon of Sunday 2 February 2025, with 65 questions for 100 marks. We read the official paper and key and tallied each question. It was the most numerical paper we tallied: 26 NATs carried 47 marks, the highest NAT total of any paper or session in this series, and the official General qualifying mark of 35.8 was the highest of the six branch papers for 2025 in this series.

PaperMechanical Engineering (ME)
Date and sessionSunday 2 February 2025, forenoon (9:30 am to 12:30 pm)
Size65 questions, 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude (15 marks), 55 subject (85 marks)
Question types38 MCQ, 1 MSQ, 26 NAT
General qualifying mark (official)35.8
Candidates appeared (official)62,015 of 79,830 registered

ME ran in one session. The qualifying mark is set from the mean and standard deviation of all marks, with a floor of 25 and a cap of 40, so a figure of 35.8 reflects how widely candidates scored. It is not a target; see the score and normalisation guide.

Subject-wise tally

The paper has no subject labels, so this is our own classification, accurate to about one question where topics overlap. We counted metrology (limits and fits) and welding processes under Manufacturing and Materials, and gave each of the thermal topics to Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer.

Applied Mechanics and Design covers engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, theory of machines, vibrations and machine design.

Question types

MCQ3851Yes: one-third mark off a 1-mark MCQ, two-thirds off a 2-mark MCQ
MSQ12No, and no partial credit
NAT2647No

There were 49 marks in MSQ and NAT, with no penalty for a wrong attempt. The single MSQ was a 2-mark question on fully developed pipe flow.

What stood out (our reading)

  • Thermal sciences were mostly numerical. Six of nine questions were NATs: radiation inside a cylindrical furnace, heat transfer in a heated tube, a steam power plant, a polytropic process on hydrogen, a reversed Carnot heat pump and an Otto cycle.
  • Applied Mechanics and Design led with 23 marks. It ran from von Mises yield and Mohr's circle to zero-force truss members, gear and slider-crank geometry, bearings, endurance limit and a fillet weld. Seven of 15 were NATs.
  • Manufacturing was the second-largest block at 19 marks. It covered surface hardening, tailor-welded blanks, solid modelling, machining ceramics, limits and fits, casting shrinkage, wire drawing, additive manufacturing, rolling and Taylor tool life.
  • Industrial Engineering was only three questions, on forecast error, a price-break order quantity and slack in a project network, but all three were 2-mark questions.
  • Fluid Mechanics showed up in different guises. Questions covered tanks with a bottom hole, Froude-number scaling, a pitot tube, an irrotational velocity field and a Pelton wheel.
  • Difficulty is our reading, not an official rating. A paper with 47 NAT marks demands exact calculation. The high qualifying mark of 35.8 suggests many candidates scored well, but the figure also depends on who sat the paper.

What it means for GATE 2027 preparation

  1. Calculation accuracy is the skill. With no options to guide you, practise full numerical solutions with units and rounding.
  2. Keep the basics of every subject. Even Industrial Engineering gave 6 marks from three questions, and Manufacturing a fifth of the paper.
  3. Do not copy one year's weights. In the 2026 ME analysis, NATs fell to 20 and MSQs vanished, Manufacturing dropped from 19 marks to 14 and Industrial Engineering rose from 6 to 10. GATE 2027 fixes Engineering Mathematics at 13 marks for ME, the same as here.
  4. Map to the four 2027 sections. The revised syllabus groups ME into Engineering Mathematics, Applied Mechanics and Design, Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences, and Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. See the mechanical preparation guide.
