The GATE 2025 Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) paper was held on the afternoon of Saturday 15 February 2025, with 65 questions for 100 marks. We read the official paper and key and tallied every question by subject and type. Engineering Mathematics was the single biggest block at 15 marks, ahead of Networks, Signals and Systems and Analog Circuits at 13 each, and the General-category qualifying mark sat at the 25 floor.

ExamGATE 2025, organised by IIT Roorkee
PaperElectronics and Communication Engineering (EC)
Date and sessionSaturday 15 February 2025, afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm)
Size65 questions, 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude (15 marks), 55 subject (85 marks)
Question types39 MCQ, 14 MSQ, 12 NAT
General qualifying mark (official)25.0
Candidates appeared (official)81,475 of 97,394 registered

The qualifying mark for General candidates is the mean plus standard deviation of all marks, but never below 25, so 25.0 means the formula produced a value at or under the floor. The GATE cut-off guide explains the rule.

Subject-wise tally

The official paper has no subject labels, so this is our own classification, accurate to about one question where topics overlap. We placed data converters under Digital Circuits and counted information theory and random processes under Communications.

MCQ3959Yes: one-third mark off a 1-mark MCQ, two-thirds off a 2-mark MCQ
MSQ1421No, and no partial credit
NAT1220No

Forty-one marks sat in MSQ and NAT questions. The official key also marks one General Aptitude question, Q8 (2 marks), as MTA, which the key's footnote defines as Marks To All.

What stood out (our reading)

  • Mathematics was spread across many sub-topics. The ten questions covered matrix rank for given parameters, series convergence, a ball-drawing probability, stationary points of a cubic, a Cauchy-Euler differential equation, an integral bound for a bounded function, contour integrals on the unit circle, a dice-sum expectation, a least-squares distance and a joint probability table.
  • Control Systems was small but dense. Six questions, three of them MSQ: a Nyquist plot, a root locus, a controller on a second-order plant, Routh counting of polynomial roots, a state-space system and a block-diagram-to-signal-flow-graph conversion.
  • Analog Circuits was broad. Nine questions touched BJT small-signal gain and biasing, ideal op-amp statements, MOSFET amplifiers, a band-pass filter, a Zener-regulated BJT pair and two diode circuits.
  • Digital included data converters. A weighted-resistor DAC and a 10-bit ADC with its SNR and data rate appeared alongside a majority gate, a full adder with an XOR and a timing-path question.
  • Electromagnetics was all two-mark. Its four questions were a surface charge distribution, the field in a copper wire, power delivered through a transmission line and the current induced in a loop, and two were NATs.
  • Communications mixed theory. It had the peak deviation of an FM signal, AWGN capacity against bandwidth, DSB-SC versus AM, a block-code distance, maximum-likelihood detection, a random process and entropy.
  • Difficulty is our reading, not an official rating. The official qualifying mark sat on the floor of 25. We read the one-mark MCQs as direct concept checks, while the 2-mark questions in mathematics, analog circuits and electromagnetics needed longer set-ups.

What it means for GATE 2027 preparation

  1. Do not skip mathematics. At 15 marks it matched the largest block. The 2027 pattern fixes Engineering Mathematics at 13 marks for EC.
  2. Revise control, devices and electromagnetics as a set. Together they gave 25 marks from 14 questions.
  3. Expect to verify options. Fourteen MSQs, including three each in Analog Circuits and Control, reward checking every statement.
  4. Compare with 2026. The 2026 EC analysis had 9 marks of mathematics but 20 in Networks, Signals and Systems, so a single year is a weak predictor. GATE 2027 revised all syllabi; confirm topics in the ECE preparation guide.
