GATE 2025 Civil Engineering (CE) was held in two sessions on Sunday 16 February 2025, each with 65 questions for 100 marks. We read both official papers and tallied every question by subject and type. Structural Engineering was the largest block, at 20 marks in each session, and the papers carried far more multiple-select questions than in 2026: 11 in Session 1 and 15 in Session 2, with 22 NATs in each.

PaperCivil Engineering, published as CE1 and CE2
DateSunday 16 February 2025
SessionsCE1 forenoon (9:30 am to 12:30 pm), CE2 afternoon (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm)
Each session65 questions, 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude (15 marks), 55 subject (85 marks)
General qualifying mark (official)29.2, for the paper as a whole
Candidates appeared (official)79,951 of 1,01,596 registered

Each candidate sat only one session, so marks from the two were normalised before scores were computed. The score guide explains how.

Subject-wise tally

The papers have no subject labels, so this is our own classification, accurate to about one question where topics overlap. We counted construction materials and project management questions with Structural Engineering, and open-channel flow under Water Resources.

The sessions again mirrored each other: Engineering Mathematics, Structural, Geotechnical and Water Resources made up 61 of the 85 subject marks in each.

MSQ11171522
NAT22412237

MSQ and NAT together held 58 marks in Session 1 and 59 in Session 2, none of them with negative marking, but every MSQ needs all correct options.

What stood out (our reading)

  • Environmental Engineering was multiple-select in Session 1. Five of its seven questions were MSQ, on sedimentation overflow rate, aeration, dissolved solids and hardness, facultative ponds and composting of municipal solid waste.
  • Mathematics used MSQ in Session 2. Four of nine questions were MSQ, on vector calculus, probability, a cubic function and eigenvalues. In Session 1 the maths block had one MSQ, on the class of a partial differential equation.
  • Structural Engineering was a fifth of each paper. Session 1 asked about two-way slabs, concrete strength variation, a frame under couples, distribution factors, beam deflection, a built-up column and construction project management; Session 2 asked about mineral admixtures, truss influence lines, shear and torsion in RC beams, a welded tube, a propped cantilever and a network diagram.
  • Water Resources was broad. Topics included Froude similarity, hydrograph methods, design flood risk, Lacey's regime, hydraulic jumps, weir cut-offs, drainage density, aquifer wells and a hydrostatic gate.
  • Geomatics nearly vanished. It had 3 questions (4 marks) in Session 1 and 2 (3 marks) in Session 2, on bearings, curvature error, reciprocal levelling and a scale mistake.
  • Difficulty is our reading, not an official rating. The MSQ-heavy sessions reward conceptual completeness, where one wrong option zeroes the question. The 2-mark NATs in structures and geotechnics needed long working. The official General qualifying mark for CE was 29.2.

What it means for GATE 2027 preparation

  1. Make Structural Engineering your anchor. Twenty marks a session is the largest single block, and it rewards diagrams, formulae and steady practice.
  2. Train for MSQs on theory subjects. Environmental, soil, bitumen and highway statements appeared as MSQs, so learn the reasons behind each rule, not only the rule.
  3. Do not neglect small subjects. In 2026, Geomatics rose to 7 and 6 marks. See the 2026 CE analysis, where MSQs fell to 6 and 4 and Structural to 17 marks.
  4. Check the revised syllabus. GATE 2027 lists CE in eight sections and fixes Engineering Mathematics at 13 marks, as here. The civil preparation guide maps the topics, and the engineering mathematics guide covers the shared maths.

Using the tally with PrepMatic

PrepMatic's free assessment (about 15 multiple-choice questions, no timer) shows your weakest subjects, subject-wise correct answers and a readiness percentage. Use the table to rank them by marks: a weak Structural score costs more than a weak Surveying one. Then build a study plan from your exam date and daily hours, and take topic tests (about 15 questions, 30 minutes) after each subject. For real CE questions, use the official papers linked below, because PrepMatic's practice questions are AI-generated.
