The skills requirement
Typist is one of the Group 4 posts that asks for more than SSLC.
- Typewriting. The Government Technical Examination certificate is in typewriting in Tamil and in English. The notification lists which Higher and Lower combinations are accepted, so check the post's table and match your certificate.
- Computer on Office Automation (COA). For some posts the qualification can be acquired during probation, but not for all, so read the post's conditions.
- Waqf Board. Typist posts in the Waqf Board are open to Muslim candidates only.
Selection
Typist posts are selected through the same Group 4 written paper as Junior Assistant. On-screen certificate verification is at 1:3 for general candidates and 1:2 for reserved candidates, and the Typist counselling ratio is also 1:3 and 1:2. A candidate who qualifies on rank still needs the certificates to be accepted, as described in certificate verification.
An example
A candidate with SSLC and the Higher Grade typewriting certificate in English only has half the typewriting requirement if the post asks for both languages. The candidate should check the post's table: a missing Tamil certificate can mean ineligibility even with a strong rank.
What to do before applying
- Get the Government Technical Examination typewriting certificates early. The notification states the date by which you must hold them.
- Match the grades to the post's table in the notification.
- Check the computer requirement and whether it can be acquired during probation for your post.
- Prepare for the Group 4 written exam as for the other posts: the typing skill does not replace the paper.
See the Group 4 syllabus for the written exam and Steno-Typist for the sister post with shorthand.
