Of the four main groups, Group 4 is the shortest and lowest-standard exam, so it is the easiest to prepare for on paper: one SSLC-standard paper, no mains, no interview. "Easiest to get into" is a different question, because the number of applicants per post is not published in the notifications we read. This page compares what is official.

Group 1 (2025)DegreePrelims, mains of 3 descriptive GS papers plus Tamil test, interviewDegreeYes, 100 marks

What "easy" depends on

  • Your qualification. If you have only SSLC or HSC, Group 4 is the only one open to you. A degree opens all four.
  • Your time. Group 4 needs one paper's preparation. Group 2 and 1 need descriptive mains writing as well. Group 2A's main paper for rank is objective, which suits those who do not want to write long answers.
  • Your Tamil. Every group has a Tamil gate. In Group 4 it is Part A, and in Groups 1 and 2/2A it is the qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test. A strong Tamil base helps in all of them.
  • The posts. Pay levels run from Level 8 for many Group 4 posts to Level 22 for Group 1. See the salary by group guide.

A practical way to choose

  1. Pick the groups your qualification allows.
  2. Count the months until each exam, using the annual planner and the live notification.
  3. Take a free diagnostic and look at your weakest subjects, because the group where your weak areas matter least is the easier one for you.

PrepMatic's free assessment is about 15 MCQs with no timer. It shows a projected score and your weakest subjects, which helps you compare options.
