What is the salary of VAO?
On this page
A Village Administrative Officer (VAO) is paid at Level 8 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix. That is the pay level printed against the post (code 2025) in TNPSC's Group 4 Notification No. 11/2026. The notification gives the level, not a rupee amount, so the exact basic pay has to be read from the state pay matrix.
How to read "Level 8"
The Tamil Nadu government pays its employees on a pay matrix with numbered levels. A level fixes the range of basic pay, and your starting basic is the entry cell of that level. TNPSC prints only the level for government posts, which is why we do not quote a rupee range here without the pay-matrix order in front of us. Look up Level 8 in the Tamil Nadu Revised Pay Rules pay matrix for the current figure.
What is added to the basic pay
Take-home pay is more than the basic. Government employees typically receive the following on top of the basic:
- Dearness allowance, revised from time to time
- House rent allowance, which depends on the city class of the posting
- Other allowances and deductions that apply to the post and place
The amounts change with government orders, so there is no fixed in-hand figure for a VAO. The salary by group guide explains how to estimate it.
Posts at the same level
| Post (Group 4, 2026) | Pay level |
|---|---|
| Village Administrative Officer | Level 8 |
| Junior Assistant | Level 8 |
| Bill Collector | Level 8 |
| Typist | Level 8 |
| Executive Officer Grade IV | Level 8 |
| Steno-Typist Grade III | Level 10 |
So a VAO is paid the same as a Junior Assistant, while a Steno-Typist Grade III is one level higher.
How to become a VAO
Pass SSLC, be at least 21 years old on 1 July 2026, know Tamil, and rank in the Group 4 exam on 10 January 2027. There are 291 VAO vacancies in this notification. Read about the job in the VAO post guide.
