SSLC standard and degree standard in TNPSC
On this page
"SSLC standard" in a TNPSC syllabus means the questions are set at the level of Tamil Nadu's Class 10 (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) curriculum. "Degree standard" means graduate level. The standard is shown beside each paper in the scheme of the notification, and it tells you how deep to study and which books to start from.
Which paper uses which standard
| Exam and paper | Standard |
|---|---|
| Group 4 (2026), the whole paper (Tamil, General Studies, Aptitude) | SSLC |
| Group 2 prelims, Part A language | SSLC |
| Group 2 prelims, Part B General Studies | Degree |
| Group 2 prelims, Part C Aptitude and Mental Ability | SSLC |
| Group 2 and 2A mains Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test) | SSLC |
| Group 2 mains Paper II (General Studies) | Degree |
| Group 2A mains Paper II, General Studies part (150 questions) | Degree |
| Group 2A mains Paper II, General Intelligence and Reasoning (50 questions) | SSLC |
| Group 1 prelims, General Studies (175 questions) | Degree |
| Group 1 prelims, Aptitude and Mental Ability (25 questions) | SSLC |
| Group 1 mains Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test) | SSLC |
| Group 1 mains Papers II to IV | Degree |
So even a degree-level exam has SSLC-level sections. In Group 2 and Group 1, the aptitude and language parts do not get harder because the General Studies part is at degree level.
What the standard changes in preparation
- SSLC-standard parts reward clear, accurate basics. Master school-level material in Tamil, mathematics and reasoning, since that is where the paper stays.
- Degree-standard parts go deeper into Indian polity, economy, history and Tamil Nadu topics, with more analysis than recall.
- Textbooks. TNPSC's own words for the literature unit of Part A are that it is based on school textbooks up to SSLC standard. Reading Class 6 to 12 Samacheer Kalvi books is a common preparation convention, not a TNPSC instruction. The books guide lists them subject by subject.
An example
A graduate preparing for Group 2 prelims splits time across three parts. Part B General Studies needs depth beyond school books. Part A language and Part C aptitude stay at Class 10 level, so a short daily practice routine is better than extra theory. The same graduate preparing for Group 4 can stay at the school level across the entire paper, with more weight on speed and accuracy.
For syllabus details of each paper, see the Group 4 syllabus and Group 2 syllabus. The code that identifies each syllabus is explained under syllabus code.
