On 8 October 2026 the Government of Tamil Nadu issued a Government Order sanctioning ₹603.34 crore as a special incentive for sugarcane farmers who supplied cane to registered sugar mills in the 2025-26 crushing season. Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister R. Vinoth announced the details.

How the ₹4,000 is made up

The Chief Minister had announced in the Assembly, under Rule 110, a special incentive of ₹709.50 a tonne on top of the Union government's Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP). The release gives the arithmetic for cane with a 9.5 per cent sugar recovery:

ComponentPer tonne
Union government FRP₹3,290.50
State special incentive₹709.50
Total assured to the farmer₹4,000

Cane with recovery above 9.5 per cent earns proportionately more than ₹4,000. The incentive covers cane supplied between 1 October 2025 and 30 September 2026 to 29 mills: 12 cooperative, 2 public sector and 15 private. Eligible farmers will be identified through a district-level committee headed by the Collector and scrutiny by the Directorate of Sugar. The money will go by direct bank transfer to Aadhaar-linked accounts, beginning around the coming Deepavali. About 90,000 farmers are expected to benefit.

Why it matters for TNPSC

Support prices and incentives for farmers fall under Unit V, Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu. The FRP is fixed by the Union government for sugarcane; a state adding an incentive above it is the same logic as the paddy incentive above the MSP. See the Indian economy guide.
