GATE is a computer-based test in English only. Still, if you studied in Tamil medium at school, or simply think through hard ideas in Tamil, a concept can make sense faster in Tamil even though you will answer in English. PrepMatic's AI Study Tutor explains GATE topics in Tamil or English, works through problems step by step, and lets you switch the reply language for any single question.

This page covers how to use Tamil explanations without losing the English you need in the exam, what to ask for each part of the paper, and how to check numerical answers. For how the tutor works in general, see the AI tutor overview.

Understand in Tamil, answer in English

Because the paper is in English, the goal is to understand an idea deeply and still recognise it instantly in English. A two-step habit does both:

  1. Ask for the concept in Tamil. For example, ask why a system is stable when all its poles lie in the left half of the s-plane, and choose தமிழ் as the reply language.
  2. Ask for the same explanation in English. Switch the reply language to English for the same question. You keep the understanding from the Tamil answer and pick up the exact terms the paper will use.

Over a few weeks this builds a vocabulary of English technical terms tied to ideas you understand, which is what GATE questions test.

What to ask, by part of the paper

GATE papers combine General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics (for most papers) and the subject itself, with multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer questions. The GATE exam pattern page explains the marks and the question types.

PartA good question to askStarting point
General Aptitude"Explain how to approach a spatial aptitude question on paper folding"Explain simply
Engineering Mathematics"Find the eigenvalues of a 2x2 matrix step by step and explain what they mean"Work through an example
Engineering Mathematics"Explain conditional probability and Bayes' theorem with one example"Explain simply
Computer Science"Explain why the worst-case time of quicksort is O(n squared)"Explain simply
Electrical"Solve a Thevenin equivalent problem step by step" (then type the circuit values)Work through an example
Mechanical"Explain the difference between the Otto and Diesel cycles with their efficiencies"Explain simply
Civil"How do I draw the bending moment diagram for a simply supported beam with a point load?"Work through an example
Any subject"What mistakes do candidates make in numerical-answer questions on this topic?"Common mistakes

The engineering mathematics and general aptitude guides list the topics and how much each part is usually worth.

Check numerical answers yourself

Numerical-answer questions give no options to fall back on, so a small slip costs the whole question. Use the tutor to learn the method, then verify the number.

  • Redo the final calculation with the on-screen style of calculator you will get in the exam, not the tutor's arithmetic.
  • Check units and orders of magnitude. If an answer seems far too large or small, ask the tutor to recheck that step.
  • Use the source line. Each answer says whether it drew on a PrepMatic reference or is a general AI explanation, which tells you how much to double-check.

What it does not do

  • No photos or diagrams. You can't send a circuit, a beam or a graph. Describe it in text, with the values.
  • Plain text for maths. Long equations can appear as plain text rather than typeset symbols, so follow them carefully.
  • No previous-year paper bank. Use the official papers and keys from the organising institute. The previous year papers and mocks guide explains how to use them.
  • A daily question limit, shown in the tutor with the time it resets, and no live classes or mentors.

How the tutor fits the rest of PrepMatic

The tutor is part of PrepMatic's GATE preparation. The free assessment shows where you stand in your branch, the study plan turns the syllabus into a schedule around the hours you have, and mock tests can be focused on your weak subjects. The tutor sits on every study session in that plan, so the topic you are studying and the place to ask about it are on the same card. The GATE preparation strategy and the GATE exam guide cover the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is GATE available in Tamil?

No. GATE is a computer-based test in English only. Tamil explanations help you understand concepts, but practise the questions themselves in English.

Can the tutor solve GATE numericals?

It can work through numericals step by step and explain the method. Redo the final calculation yourself, because an AI can make arithmetic or unit mistakes.

Can I ask about my own branch?

Yes. Name the subject and topic in your question, or open the tutor from a topic in your PrepMatic study plan, where the chat starts with that topic.

Can I send a circuit diagram?

No. The tutor is text only. Describe the circuit with its component values, or type the question as it is written.

Is there a limit on questions?

Yes. The tutor shows how many questions you have left today and when the count resets.
