In a bank exam you score each correct answer at the question's marks and lose one-fourth of those marks for every wrong answer, while unattempted questions score zero. The calculator below does this section by section. Pick an IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk (CSA), IBPS RRB or SBI PO 2026 pattern, or type your own sections, then enter your correct and wrong answers.

How the calculator works

Marks per question are the section's marks divided by its questions. A section score is correct answers × that figure, minus wrong answers × that figure × the penalty. The default penalty is 0.25, one-fourth of the marks assigned to the question, which is what the 2026 notifications for SBI PO, IBPS CSA and IBPS RRB state. For IBPS PO, confirm the penalty in the notification and change the box if it differs.

Marks per question are not always 1. In IBPS PO prelims, Quantitative Aptitude has 35 questions for 30 marks, so the tool asks for section marks, not marks per question.

The SBI PO 2026 advertisement gives 100 marks for prelims with no section split, so the tool treats each question as 1 mark. Descriptive papers are marked separately and are not included. Our guides cover each pattern: IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk and SBI PO.

Worked examples

Example 1: IBPS CSA prelims.

SectionCorrectWrongCalculationScore
English (30)24424 − 4 × 0.2523
Numerical Ability (35)28528 − 5 × 0.2526.75
Reasoning (35)30330 − 3 × 0.2529.25
Total821279 out of 100

Example 2: SBI PO prelims. English 32 correct and 6 wrong gives 30.5. Quant 18 correct and 8 wrong gives 16. Reasoning 22 correct and 5 wrong gives 20.75. The total is 67.25 out of 100.

Example 3: unequal marks. In IBPS PO prelims, Quant is worth 30/35 = 6/7 of a mark per question. With 20 correct and 6 wrong, the score is 20 × 6/7 − 6 × 6/7 × 0.25 = 15.86. Add English 20.75 (22 correct, 5 wrong) and Reasoning 27.43 (25 correct, 4 wrong) for a total of 64.04.

Sectional cut-offs and mock scores

IBPS PO and CSA prelims have a sectional cut-off in each of the three tests, decided by IBPS, so a strong total with one weak section can still fail. SBI PO prelims have no sectional cut-off. That is why the tool shows section scores and not only the total.

A mock score is an estimate: IBPS normalises scores across sessions and cut-offs change every cycle, so we give no target score. The mock test strategy guide shows how to turn mock scores into a plan. PrepMatic mock tests apply negative marking where the exam has it and can be focused on your weak subjects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the negative marking in bank exams?

For SBI PO, IBPS CSA and IBPS RRB 2026, one-fourth of the marks assigned to the question is deducted for each wrong answer. The tool defaults to that and lets you change it.

Is there a penalty for unattempted questions?

No. The deduction is for wrong answers, and unattempted questions score zero.

Does the calculator include the descriptive paper?

No. IBPS PO mains has a 25-mark descriptive paper and SBI PO mains has a 30-mark Communication Skills paper. Both are marked separately.
