பிறனில் விழையாமை: Not Coveting Another's Wife

Chapter 15 of 133 (Piranil Vizhaiyaamai) · Virtue · Domestic Virtue · Kurals 141 to 150

About this chapter

பிறனில் விழையாமை, not coveting another's wife, deals with respect for another person's household. The chapter addresses the householder and treats trespass of this kind as folly, sin and disgrace.

Kural 141 and Kural 142 call this desire foolishness, saying that those who know virtue and the rights of property do not feel it, and that none are greater fools than those who lurk at a neighbour's door. Kural 143 says that those who plot evil against a trusting friend's household are no better than the dead. Kurals 144 and 145 add that greatness is of no use to such a man, and that one who treats the act as a trifle earns guilt that never passes. Kural 146 gives the key list of four things that never leave him: hatred (பகை), sin (பாவம்), fear (அச்சம்) and disgrace (பழி). Kural 147 calls the man who holds back a true householder, Kural 148 calls his restraint both virtue and dignity (பேராண்மை, great manliness), and Kural 149 names him as the one who deserves good in the world. Kural 150 ends with a low bar: even a person who does little good deserves some credit if he does not covet a neighbour's wife.

Kural 146 is the most useful, because it names the consequences clearly. Kural 148 is also worth knowing for the phrase பேராண்மை, great manliness.

For the syllabus, the chapter concerns personal conduct and everyday life.
