NEET Human Reproduction: 5 practice MCQs with answers
On this page
Human Reproduction is a Class 12 Biology chapter that covers the male and female reproductive systems, gametogenesis, the menstrual cycle, fertilisation, pregnancy and lactation. Many questions test sequence and hormones. The five MCQs below cover Leydig cells, the yield of spermatogenesis, ovulation, the site of fertilisation and a hormone made only in pregnancy.
What this chapter covers in the NEET syllabus
Human Reproduction belongs to the NMC unit Reproduction, and it is the Class 12 NCERT chapter of the same name. The topics are:
- The male reproductive system: testes, ducts, accessory glands and the penis.
- The female reproductive system: ovaries, oviducts, uterus, vagina and the mammary glands.
- Gametogenesis: spermatogenesis and oogenesis, and the structure of the sperm and ovum.
- The menstrual cycle and its hormonal control.
- Fertilisation, implantation, pregnancy and placenta formation, parturition and lactation.
Five practice MCQs on Human Reproduction
Question 1
The cells that lie between the seminiferous tubules and secrete testosterone are the:
- A. spermatogonia
- B. Sertoli cells
- C. spermatids
- D. Leydig cells
Question 2
The number of sperms formed from one primary spermatocyte is:
- A. 1
- B. 2
- C. 4
- D. 8
Question 3
Ovulation in the menstrual cycle is induced by a rapid surge in the level of:
- A. FSH
- B. LH
- C. progesterone
- D. hCG
Question 4
In humans, fertilisation normally takes place in the:
- A. uterus
- B. cervix
- C. ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube
- D. vagina
Question 5
Which of the following hormones is produced only during pregnancy?
- A. hCG
- B. FSH
- C. LH
- D. Progesterone
Answers and explanations
- D. Leydig cells, also called interstitial cells, lie in the spaces between the seminiferous tubules and produce androgens, mainly testosterone. Sertoli cells inside the tubules nourish the germ cells.
- C. A primary spermatocyte (2n) divides by meiosis I into two secondary spermatocytes, each of which divides by meiosis II into two spermatids. So one primary spermatocyte gives four spermatids, which mature into four sperms by spermiogenesis.
- B. A rapid secretion of luteinising hormone (the LH surge) in the middle of the cycle, around day 14, causes the Graafian follicle to rupture and release the ovum. FSH stimulates follicular growth, and progesterone is made later by the corpus luteum.
- C. The sperm swims through the female tract, and the ovum released at ovulation meets it in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube, where fertilisation occurs. The zygote then moves to the uterus for implantation.
- A. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), human placental lactogen (hPL) and relaxin are produced in women only during pregnancy. FSH, LH and progesterone are present in non-pregnant women too.
How to prepare Human Reproduction
- Learn by diagrams. Draw the male and female reproductive systems, a section of the testis, a seminiferous tubule, the structure of the sperm, and a section of the ovary showing follicle stages. NCERT diagrams carry the labels asked in questions.
- Memorise the gametogenesis tables. For spermatogenesis and oogenesis, write the cell types, ploidy, number of divisions and the end products. Note that oogenesis begins in the foetus, pauses in prophase I and resumes at puberty, and the secondary oocyte completes meiosis II only on fertilisation.
- Make a menstrual cycle chart. Days, follicular phase, ovulation, luteal phase and menstruation, with the levels of FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone. Link every event to the hormone responsible.
- Remember the timeline of early development: zygote, cleavage, morula, blastocyst, implantation, and the placenta's role. Hormones produced by the placenta (hCG, hPL, oestrogens, progestogens and relaxin) are a standard question.
- Connect to health topics. Reproductive health and its methods are in a related chapter, so cross-check which topics are listed in the NMC PDF.
Because the chapter is sequence-based, flow charts work better than prose notes. See the NEET Biology preparation guide for scheduling, and compare plant reproduction in Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants.
