The TNPSC Group 1 preliminary paper of 27 September 2026 was a single paper of 200 questions: General Studies (degree standard) plus aptitude and mental ability. We read TNPSC's tentative-key booklet and counted it unit by unit. Indian Polity had 40 questions and Tamil Nadu history and culture 44, and roughly two in three General Studies questions used a statement, match or assertion-reason format.

This is a screening paper: as in the 2025 notification, preliminary marks decide the shortlist for the main examination and are not added to your final rank (see the Group 1 exam pattern). Because the key is still tentative, a few answers may change after objections.

Unit-wise tally

The syllabus for code 497 has six General Studies units (175 questions) and an aptitude part (25 questions). The booklet does not label units, so the assignment is ours. By content we count 174 General Studies and 26 aptitude and reasoning questions, one off the notified split because a single question could sit either side.

VI History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu446640
Part B: Aptitude and Mental Ability263925

The paper runs through the units twice: General Studies from the start, a first aptitude block of twelve questions, a second General Studies pass, and a closing block of fourteen aptitude questions.

What stood out

  • Polity matched its indicative count exactly: 40 questions on fundamental rights and duties, the President, Governor and Council of Ministers, Money Bills, Lokpal and Lok Ayukta, panchayats, RTI and constitutional amendments.
  • Statement formats dominated. Out of 174 General Studies questions, about 35 were assertion-reason, 33 match-the-following, 39 statement or incorrect-pair questions and 10 chronological orderings, roughly 67% in all.
  • Tamil Nadu content was a quarter of General Studies. Unit VI alone had 44 questions: Justice Party, Self-Respect Movement, Anna and Periyar, Vellore, Palayakkarars, Sangam literature, excavations such as Keezhadi and Porunai, and Siddhars.
  • Thirukkural appeared eight times, including questions on its commentators, a couplet on love, and an assertion drawn from the listening couplets.
  • Recent affairs were woven into units. Topics included the Pahalgam attack and India's response in May 2025 (the assertion names the wrong operation and the key marks it false), the SHANTI Bill 2025 on nuclear energy, MSME announcements in Union Budget 2026-27, the National Sports Awards for 2024, the Zojila tunnel project and the first Indian astronaut at the International Space Station.
  • Exact figures mattered: Lok Sabha dates, Article numbers, Finance Commission criteria and Lok Ayukta establishment years.
  • Aptitude covered brick counts, compound against simple interest, partnership, polynomial HCF, percentage change, series, dice and a syllogism, then work and time, ratio, LCM, coding and a train-timing problem.

Difficulty (our reading)

High on recall and precision, moderate on reasoning. The facts were degree-level and options were often combinations, so partial knowledge cost marks. The aptitude blocks were routine for anyone who has practised SSLC arithmetic.

What this means for your preparation

  1. Treat Unit V as the biggest block. It joins economy with Tamil Nadu development administration, so study Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu together.
  2. Master polity at statement level. Learn each Article with its exceptions and test yourself on true/false pairs from Indian Polity.
  3. Keep Tamil Nadu history at a quarter of your time, using Tamil Nadu history, culture and heritage and a dedicated Thirukkural revision slot.
  4. Run a 12-month current-affairs log by unit, because this paper pulled from 2025 and 2026 events.
  5. Compare years. The 2025 prelims analysis and the 2024 analysis show how polity grew from 25 to 37 to 40 questions. Use the Group 1 syllabus and Group 1 preparation strategy to fit it into a plan; the method in the Group 4 previous year questions guide works for this paper too.
