On 14 September 2026 Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay ordered the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Anna Medals for police and other uniformed services. The medals are announced every year on the occasion of Dr. Anna's birthday, 15 September, for outstanding devotion to duty.
Who gets the medal
The release counts 180 officers and personnel in all. It lists:
| Service | Anna Medals |
|---|---|
| Police (Head Constable to Superintendent of Police) | 138 |
| Fire and Rescue Services (Fireman to Deputy Director) | 20 |
| Prisons and Correctional Services (Grade-I Warder to Deputy Jailor) | 10 |
| Home Guards (Assistant Platoon Commander to Company Commander) | 5 |
| Finger Print Bureau (Additional Superintendent of Police) | 2 |
| Forensic Sciences Department | 4 |
Separately, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Fire Service Medal for Gallantry for 2026 goes to Fireman Driver R. Rajasekar of the Nagercoil Fire and Rescue Station. On 19 May 2026 he swam out about 100 metres at Lemuria Beach and rescued a nine-year-old boy who had been swept away. The medals will be presented at a ceremonial parade later.
Why it matters for TNPSC
Awards and honours are a regular current-affairs theme, and the person behind the name matters too. C.N. Annadurai (Anna) became Chief Minister in 1967, and the Group 2 and 2A prelims list the contributions of Periyar and Anna under Unit VI, History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements of Tamil Nadu. See the Tamil Nadu history and culture guide.
