Thaaimaaman Gold Ring Scheme launched for newborns in government hospitals
On 28 September 2026 Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam (Thaaimaaman Gold Ring Scheme) at the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. Under it, every child born in a government hospital in Tamil Nadu gets a gold ring weighing 1 gram.
Scheme details
- The scheme applies to births in government hospitals from 22 June 2026. The Government Order was issued on 23 June 2026.
- The state has allocated ₹755.83 crore for this year, and about 4.41 lakh children are expected to benefit every year.
- Each ring comes with a unique serial number and tamper-proof packaging.
- The 18 September release says mothers must live permanently in Tamil Nadu and be registered in the state's PICME monitoring software with an RCH ID.
- About 1.07 lakh children born from 22 June to 27 September are getting rings through 102 emergency obstetric care centres. From 28 September a child receives the ring on leaving hospital.
- Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts were left out for now because the model code of conduct applied there for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram bye-elections.
The release ties the scheme to the Tamil custom of the maternal uncle (thaaimaaman) honouring a newborn. Tamil Nadu has about 7.80 lakh births a year, of which about 4.20 lakh (53 per cent) are in government hospitals; NFHS-6 data show 99.9 per cent of births take place in hospitals.
