At the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, India's Open team won the silver medal and India's Women's team the bronze. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay congratulated four Tamil Nadu players in these teams on 27 September 2026: Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, Vaishali and Savitha Shri.

What the release says

  • Four of the 10 players in the Indian squads are from Tamil Nadu.
  • Savitha Shri won an individual gold, Gukesh an individual silver and Praggnanandhaa an individual bronze.
  • The Chief Minister said such results make Tamil Nadu a major centre of chess, in India and across the world.

The release gives these results in the following form:

PlayerTeam medalIndividual medal
PraggnanandhaaOpen team, silverBronze
GukeshOpen team, silverSilver
VaishaliWomen's team, bronzeNot mentioned
Savitha ShriWomen's team, bronzeGold

Tamil Nadu has a long link with the event: the state hosted the 44th Chess Olympiad at Mamallapuram in 2022.

Why it matters for TNPSC

Sports is not a named unit in the Group 4 syllabus, so this is lower priority than polity, economy and Tamil Nadu schemes. For a general-awareness page, note the edition number, venue and medals. The 2022 link is more useful: Mamallapuram, the host town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which connects to Unit VI, History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements of Tamil Nadu. Revise it with the Tamil Nadu history and culture guide.
