Tamil Nadu's Revenue Augmentation Committee holds its 4th meeting
The Revenue Augmentation Committee, chaired by Montek Singh Ahluwalia, held its fourth meeting in Chennai on 18 September 2026. The Tamil Nadu government set the committee up to suggest ways of raising the state's own tax and non-tax revenues on a sustainable basis.
What happened at the meeting
According to the release, the meeting began with an internal discussion among the chairman and members on the committee's progress. The Tamil Nadu departments concerned then made presentations on revenue measures, including dividends from State Public Sector Undertakings and other revenue items. Later, the two sub-committees, headed by committee members Najib Shah and Arbind Modi, reported on their studies. The Joint Secretary, Finance, who is the convener of the committee, proposed the vote of thanks. The release does not announce any recommendation or decision.
Why it matters for TNPSC
State finance sits in Unit V, Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu. Two terms are worth being precise about:
- A state's own tax revenue is what the state itself raises through taxes, such as its share of GST (SGST), stamp duty and registration fees, state excise and motor vehicle tax.
- Non-tax revenue includes dividends and profits from state public sector undertakings, interest receipts, user charges and royalties.
States also receive devolved shares and grants from the Union, but those are not "own" revenue. A committee like this looks at the first two categories. See the Indian economy guide for fiscal basics.
