அன்புடைமை: The Possession of Love

அன்புடைமை, the possession of love, is about the quality that gives household life its life. Its claim is blunt: without love (அன்பு), virtue, the body and even domestic life are hollow.
Kural 71 opens with the image that love cannot be locked away, since tears reveal it. Kural 72 contrasts the loveless, who keep everything for themselves, with the loving, who consider even their bones to belong to others. Kural 73 ties the soul's union with the body to love, and Kural 74 traces how love leads to fondness and then to friendship (நட்பு). Kural 75 speaks of the joy that a life of love brings, and Kural 76 corrects the idea that love serves virtue alone, saying it also helps against vice. Kurals 77 to 80 then turn to the loveless. Virtue scorches them as the sun scorches creatures without bone (Kural 77), their life is like a dry tree sprouting in the desert (Kural 78), and their outward limbs are of no use without this inner one (Kural 79). Kural 80 ends with the sharpest line: the body of the loveless is bone covered with skin.
The wordplay is worth noticing: என்பு (bone) echoes அன்பு (love) in Kurals 72, 73, 77 and 80. Kurals 72 and 80 are the two to remember.
