வான்சிறப்பு: The Blessing of Rain

Chapter 2 of 133 (Vaansirappu) · Virtue · Prologue · Kurals 11 to 20

About this chapter

வான்சிறப்பு, the greatness of rain, is the second chapter of the prologue. Its theme is that rain is the foundation on which food, farming, giving and righteous conduct stand, which is why it comes before the teaching on domestic life.

The kurals build the argument step by step. Kural 11 states the claim: rain keeps the world going and deserves to be called ambrosia (அமிழ்தம்). Kural 12 adds that rain both produces good food and is itself a drink. Kurals 13 to 17 describe what happens when it fails: hunger spreads (Kural 13), ploughing stops (Kural 14), not even green grass is seen (Kural 16), and the sea itself shrinks if the clouds do not return its water (Kural 17). Kural 15 balances this: rain can ruin people by its absence and raise them again by its arrival.

The last three kurals turn from farming to duty. Without rain, festivals and worship cease (Kural 18), and gifts and penance (தானம், தவம்) cannot stand (Kural 19). Kural 20 closes with a parallel: as the world cannot do without water, no one's ordered life can do without rain. Pope reads the key word ஒழுக்கு as duty, while the prose translation reads it as flowing water.

Kural 11 and Kural 20 are the two to remember, for rain as ambrosia and for the link between nature and conduct.

For the syllabus, the chapter fits the theme of everyday life, since it ties farming and food to ethics.
