அழுக்காறாமை: Not Envying

Chapter 17 of 133 (Azhukkaaraamai) · Virtue · Domestic Virtue · Kurals 161 to 170

About this chapter

அழுக்காறாமை, not envying, argues that freedom from envy is a treasure and envy is a self-inflicted ruin. The chapter pairs well with the next one, since envy and covetousness both begin in resentment of what others have.

Kural 161 asks that an envy-free mind be held as a rule of conduct, and Kural 162 says no gain equals being free from envy toward anyone. Kural 163 states the reverse: whoever cannot rejoice in another's wealth wants neither virtue nor prosperity. Kural 164 notes that the wise avoid wrongdoing out of envy because they know the disgrace that follows. Kurals 165 to 168 describe the damage: envy alone is enough to destroy a person even without enemies (Kural 165), the envious person's relatives go without food and clothing (Kural 166), Lakshmi turns away and points him to her sister, misfortune (Kural 167), and envy itself is a sinner (பாவி) that destroys wealth and sends the soul to a bad end (Kural 168). Kural 169 notes that people ask why the envious prosper while the upright suffer, and Kural 170 settles the question: the envious never become great, and the envy-free are never without greatness.

Kural 162 is the most useful as a statement of the aim, while Kural 168 has the sharpest wording.

For the syllabus, it gives a clear case of universal values, expressed in terms that suit everyday life.
