Waterfalls of Tamil Nadu: river, district and key facts
On this page
The most famous waterfall in Tamil Nadu is Hogenakkal on the Cauvery, in Dharmapuri district, often called the Niagara of India. Courtallam (Kutralam) in Tenkasi district is the best-known hill waterfall, and Thalaiyar Falls near Kodaikanal is usually quoted as the tallest in the state. Waterfalls in the Western Ghats are fed by the south-west monsoon, while those in the interior flow mainly after the north-east monsoon.

Short notes on most-asked items
- Hogenakkal. The Cauvery tumbles over rocky ledges and gorges. Visitors ride round coracles through the gorge.
- Courtallam. Known as the Spa of the South for its herbal waters. The main season is during the south-west monsoon, from June to September, when the Western Ghats feed the Chittar even though the plains stay dry.
- Thalaiyar. Also called the Rat Tail Falls for its thin, long drop. It is in the Palani hills.
- Catherine and Pykara. Both in the Nilgiris. Pykara is also the site of a hydro-electric project.
- Papanasam region. Agasthiyar Falls and Banatheertham lie along the upper Tamirabarani. See rivers of Tamil Nadu.
- Theni. Suruli and Kumbakarai are the two best-known falls of the district.
Why waterfalls matter for exams
Waterfall questions are a disguised river and district question. A typical item asks "Hogenakkal falls are on which river" or "which district has Courtallam". Learn each fall with its river, district and one detail. The hill stations of Tamil Nadu page covers the hills around them, and dams in Tamil Nadu covers the reservoirs downstream.
How to revise
Group the falls by region. Western Ghats south (Courtallam, Agasthiyar, Manimuthar, Banatheertham, Thirparappu), central hills (Thalaiyar, Suruli, Kumbakarai), Nilgiris (Catherine, Pykara), Anamalai and Siruvani (Monkey, Kovai Kutralam), Eastern Ghats (Kiliyur, Agaya Gangai) and the Cauvery (Hogenakkal). For physical geography background see the TNPSC geography guide.
