Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram
The Pallava kings Narasimhavarman I (Mamalla) and Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha) created the Mamallapuram monuments. They include:
- the Shore Temple, a structural granite temple from the time of Rajasimha;
- the Five Rathas (Pancha Pandava Rathas), monolithic temples cut from single rocks;
- the Arjuna's Penance (Descent of the Ganges) bas-relief;
- cave temples such as the Varaha cave and mandapas such as the Krishna Mandapa.
The site was inscribed in 1984, among the first Indian entries. See ancient dynasties of Tamil Nadu for the Pallava context.
Great Living Chola Temples
| Temple | Place | Built by | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brihadisvara (Brihadeeswarar) | Thanjavur | Rajaraja I, completed 1010 | Inscribed 1987; vimana about 66 m high |
| Gangaikonda Cholisvaram | Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Ariyalur district | Rajendra I | Added in 2004; marked his Ganga victory |
| Airavatesvara | Darasuram, near Kumbakonam | Rajaraja II | Added in 2004; 12th century |
They are called "living" because worship continues in them. The first listing in 1987 covered only the Thanjavur temple, and the other two were added as an extension in 2004. More detail on all three is in important temples of Tamil Nadu.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The line climbs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Udhagamandalam (Ooty) over about 46 km using the Abt rack-and-pinion system, with the full line opened in 1908. It was added to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's listing (inscribed 1999) in 2005, and Kalka-Shimla joined in 2008. That is why the property is called "Mountain Railways of India".
Western Ghats and Senji Fort
The Western Ghats were inscribed in 2012 as a serial natural property with 39 component parts across Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. In July 2025, the Maratha Military Landscapes of India were inscribed. Eleven of the twelve forts are in Maharashtra, and the twelfth, Senji (Gingee) Fort in Villupuram district, is in Tamil Nadu.
Do not confuse these with other UNESCO tags
- The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (the first in India, 1986), the Gulf of Mannar (2001) and the Agasthyamalai (2016) biosphere reserves are in UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere network, not on the World Heritage List.
- Chennai joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Music in 2017. That is a network title, not a World Heritage listing.
- Great Living Chola Temples is one property with three temples. If a question says "three World Heritage temples", it means these.
